American Idiot June 7–10 Direct from Broadway, the smash-hit musical American Idiot follows the exhila- rating journey of three lifelong friends— Johnny, Tunny and Will—forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of sub- urbia in a post-9/11 world. When the three disgruntled men flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, their paths are quickly estranged when Tunny enters the armed forces, Will is called home to attend familial responsibil- ities, and Johnny's attention becomes divided by a seductive love interest and a hazardous new friendship. This high- octane show includes every song from Green Day's album American Idiot, including "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "21 Guns," "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and "Holiday." Brilliant direction, choreography, orchestrations and arrangements result in an experience The New York Times declared "thrilling … charged with urgency, rich in memorable melody and propulsive rhythms." The subject matter in this rock opera is recom- mended for ages 16-plus. Thursday, June 7; 7:30 pm; $62 Sunday, June 10; 1 pm; $70 Noncancelable/nonrefundable The Book of Mormon January 17–20, 2013 "The new gold standard for rowdy fun on Broadway," according to Rolling Stone, is The Book of Mormon, which hits the road and comes to Seattle for the very first time. This religious musical satire is the first musical comedy composed by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone— after a lifelong fascination with Mormonism and musicals—and Avenue Q's Robert Lopez. This nine-time Tony Award-winner and Broadway blockbuster tells the story of two young mormon missionaries, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, sent to Uganda to fulfill their religious duties for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. What happens to the missionaries in poor, hun- gry, AIDS-plagued Africa is ... well, "it's R-rated, hilarious, humane, and the basis of an exhilarating Broadway musical at once revolutionary and classic, funny and obscene, uncompromising in production standards and unafraid of just about any- thing else" says Entertainment Weekly. The Book of Mormon is an equal-opportu- nity offender that playfully pokes fun at religion, sexuality, poverty and race while inspiring an after-the-show discussion of religion in general. 52 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | MAY / JUNE 2012 WAC Toastmasters Tuesdays, May 1, 8, 15, 22; June 5, 12, 19 Good communication requires patience, practice and consistency. Remembering Rita Member Rita Finkel, on right, died on March 5. She loved the WAC and often treated friends to Club events. She served on the Arts & Entertainment Committee and the Program Board. Rita's zest for life can be seen in this photo, in which she volunteered impromptu to play a part in a musical spoof. "The WAC absolutely meant the world to her," friend Paul Ravetta said.
