L Sailing and chic mix in Southern California Michelle Van Slack is Director Member Services. Send her feedback on your reciprocal club visits at mvanslack@wac.net set your compass south for the California Yacht Club. This club, known fondly as the CYC, is situated in Marina del Rey, the world's largest man-made small-craft harbor. While you're there, explore nearby beaches, walk around Fisherman's Village waterfront mall, enjoy lunch in the spectacular CYC dining room, and grab a cocktail in the bar overlooking the marina. Founded in 1922, the California Yacht Club has left an indelible ike many of you, I love the recreational opportunities available in Seattle this time of the year. But if summer refuses to reveal itself as soon as you'd like, then batten down the hatches and mark on the yachting world. Members of the CYC have sailed worldwide in every major regatta and garnered top honors in national and international competitions, including the Olympics. The CYC's Sunset Series regatta takes place through September, and you can watch hundreds of boats race every Wednesday. Post-race socializing amps up in the club's dining room, which offers spectacular marina views. Starlight Series races occur on Thursdays through August and feature about a dozen Star-class boats, the oldest class still racing in the Olympics. WAC members seeking accommodations that don't involve a boat slip need not worry. The Los Angeles Athletic Club, another WAC reciprocal club, is just 20 minutes away—depending on traffic, of course. It is L.A., after all. Located downtown, The Los Angeles Athletic Club is owned by the same family as the CYC and maintains 72 lavish guest rooms, including nine one-bedroom suites. Whether the California Yacht Club or The Los Angeles Athletic Club, a letter of introduction from WAC Member Services is your ticket to entry. Either way, sunshine is almost guaranteed, especially this time of year. 10 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | MAY / JUNE 2012 4469 Admiralty Way Marina del Rey, CA 90292 P: 310.823.4567 E: calyachtclub.com PROXIMITY » The club is four miles from Los Angeles International Airport DOCKS » Guest boat slips from 25–108 feet » Two 4,000-pound self-operated hoists » 150 dinghy racks » Free Wi-Fi Contact the dock master at 310.823.4567 to reserve a slip.
