WAC cook named Team Member of the Year WHEN O. RUMMEL FIRST APPLIED FOR A BANQUET cook position at the WAC, he wasn't hired. When another position opened a couple of weeks later, he applied again, this time for a pantry cook position. The executive chef interviewed him and didn't hesitate. O. started the same week. That was more than 13 years ago. This past February, O. received the 2011 WAC Team Member of the Year Award. President Emeritus Jim Johnson delivered the award at the annual team member awards banquet. Attendees enjoyed entertainment, and many others received awards and recognition at the event held in the Crystal Ballroom. During his tenure at the Club, O. has worked as a pantry cook, line cook and banquet cook. He's also spent time in the bakery and one summer even filled in doing flower arrangements. Most recently, he was named head of the employee meal program. "O. has been a valuable asset to the WAC for many years," Executive Chef Eric Floyd says. "He's a go-getter, a self-starter; he's energetic and passionate." And in case you're wondering his full first name, just ask. "O. is my full name," he says. "Just make sure to spell it properly. It's O-period. It's also my dad's first name and the world's most popular one-letter first name." O.'s hard work and peer-voted 1 2 3 recognition earned him an extra week of vacation and $1,000. "It's been very easy to do a good job," O. says. "Because I think the people I'm serving deserve it." —DARRICK MENEKEN 6 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | MAY / JUNE 2012 WAC TRAINER DAVID SIMPSON SHOWS US THE PLANK TO PUSH-UP EXERCISE. This is a great "core" exercise to work your abdomen and low back, while working on the muscles of your shoulders and chest at the same time. 1. Start in a plank position with your toes and forearms on the ground. Keep your body straight. 2. Lift your right arm and put your hand on the ground, straightening your elbow. 3. Lift your left arm and put your hand on the ground, straightening your elbow. You should now be in push-up position. Lower yourself back into starting position one arm at a time. Repeat 10 times, then 10 more leading with your left arm. MAY / JUNE | 2012 WAC Magazine Online Take WAC Magazine with you without even trying.
