{BUZZ} Memories: 1949-50 By Dee Sanwick, History Committee Chair WELCOME, LADIES The Board of Governors opened a special classification of membership for 50 carefully chosen single women under the age of 30. Initiation fee for the young women was $25, with monthly dues of $4. AMERICAN POET One of the era's most original American writers, poet Ogden Nash, read his own "tortured rhyme" at the Club. The event took place in the Main Lounge. A TOAST, PLEASE Club members were encouraged to meet weekly for dinner and to practice public speaking under the guidance of Toastmasters International. Several WAC members were trying to charter a Toastmasters club here. They succeeded, and to this day Toastmasters continues to meet at the WAC. HIP TO BE SQUARE A square-dance party and dinner took place at the Club. An announcement recommended the event for those over age 9 and under age 90. RECIPROCAL CLUBS A list of 37 clubs with which the WAC shared exchange privileges contained 10 with sleeping accommodations for "men and their families" and 14 that accommodated men only. Today, there are 218 clubs in the WAC's reciprocal network. Williams 2007 Domaine Drouhin, Laurène (Pinot Noir), Willamette Valley, Oregon Tasting notes: Beautiful Bing cherry- red in color with shades of plum on the rim. Bright red fruit, including strawberry and raspberry, show in the nose with a hint of blood orange on the palate. This wine is much cleaner and purer than prior vintages. The precision and purity of flavor carry a soft and silky texture with a long-lasting finish. Try pairing with Torchy's Alaskan salmon or grilled scallops. Discovery: If you never have had the opportunity to try Domaine Drouhin wines, I highly recommend taking a weekend to explore the Willamette Valley. This beautiful wine sips perfectly while sitting on the patio outside the winery near Dundee, Oregon. While there, take some time to enjoy the vineyard views and bird songs. And don't be afraid to ask winemaker Véronique Drouhin— whose family's winemaking roots trace to Burgundy, France—how she keeps the deer away. Whatever you do, breathe in the clean country air as you watch the sun drift behind rolling hills and set with golden hues. I have little doubt you'll fall in love with this exceptional wine and place. —Sara A. Williams is WAC Restaurant Manager and a Level 1 Sommelier. LUKE RUTAN (2)
