MEET THE ATHLETE SHEILA WALSH MAKE SATURDAYS COUNT KIDS AND PARENTS: Get pumped! Our Juniors classes are growing and getting even better. A fit life By Darrick Meneken SHEILA WALSH joined the WAC in 1978. The 59-year-old mother of two started bike racing two years ago and is now the top Category 4 female cyclist in Washington state. We caught up with Sheila to ask about her racing, her workouts and her inspiration. What does it mean to be the best "Cat 4" female cyclist in Washington state? The ranking is based on an algorithm that looks at the quality of races I've done and my performance. There are 85 registered female Cat 4 racers in the state. It's the category for beginning women of all ages. What's your next big event? Nationals on September 5–9 in Bend, Oregon. I'll do the criterium and road race. Other than cycling, how do you stay fit? I ride year-round, even in foul weather. I do two to three Pilates mat classes a week. I also enjoy TRX, boot camp and snow fitness classes. I go downhill and backcountry skiing about 50 times a year. I also do some spin classes in the winter. Any tips for aspiring racers? Get nine hours of sleep a night and eat plenty of protein. How about favorite adventures? About two weeks after I started dating my husband, in 1986, I rode my bike to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He rode with me to Yakima. Later that summer, I summited Mount Rainier with the WAC. Why the WAC? It's a wonderful place. I'm still friends with women I met in weight-training class in 1980. What inspires you? Motivating other women to get out and do what they love—at any age.
