A cyclical trend is something that fluctuates widely according to variations in the economy. Something is considered secular if it is of or relating to a long term of indefinite duration. As a member leader of the WAC, I think about the trends that affect the Club all the time as I attend committee meetings, and I know our Club's management does as well. Some trends are relatively easy to read. For example, take RevPAR (Revenue Per Average Room) at our Inn at the WAC. During the recession, our RevPAR fell sharply as occupancy rates dropped due to a decline in travel and the resulting price competition that pressured this key metric. During the past 12 to 18 months, how- ever, our RevPAR has been on a very nice upswing, and the bottom line of our hotel has benefitted accordingly. This behavior has followed a normal cyclical pattern. Coming up with an example of a secular trend is a little more challenging, but I'll take a stab at it. Michelle Pinson, Vice President Membership & Marketing, reported during the recession that the sales cycle to bring on a new member had lengthened considerably. Prospective new members were taking more time to make a decision and asking more questions along the way. In spite of the economic recovery, the sales cycle today remains long and our staff has to work harder to bring on new members. Is this a secular trend that is destined to be with us for some time? If so, how do we best equip ourselves to deal with this change? Perhaps this is a long-winded way of getting to my real point—that it's critical for he recent recession that we are slowly working our way out of has resulted in all of us looking at things surrounding our businesses in a very different manner. One question I find myself asking constantly is whether a current trend is Letter from the Chairman Jeff Atkin, Chairman of the Board of Governors / atkin@kkra.com WAC leadership and management to be as smart as they can in understanding what's important to the membership, currently and in the future. The ability to retain mem- bers and add new ones is critical to the long-term vitality of our club. This fall we will be having an "all hands" membership meeting. It will be an oppor- tunity for you to hear from President & CEO Chuck Nelson, as well as to interact with WAC leadership. We want to hear what you have to say so that the Club can best meet your needs. 4 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2012
