Learn about these time- honored traditions and celebrate these multidimensional holidays. Start at the WAC and travel by motor coach to El Centro de la Raza (Center for People of All Races), where we'll meet our guide for a tour of approximately 20 altars. A perma- nent altar, or ofrenda, is on display for founder and executive director for 37 years, Roberto Maestas, a proud WAC member and humanitarian who passed away in 2010. You'll learn the details and meaning of the altars—some elaborate, some simple, and all rich in symbolism. After the tour, take in the festivities, including dancing and traditional foods such as mole (MOH- lay), rice, beans, pan dulce (sweet bread) and hot chocolate. Includes dinner and guided tour at the center as well as round- trip transportation from the WAC. 4:45–7:30 pm; $35; cancel by October 23 ESCAPADES Lawn Bowling at Woodland Park Wednesday, August 8 Join us as we party with the spirits—both kinds—and raise a glass to the living dead. 5:30–8 pm; $38; cancel by October 18; adult-themed stories; 21 and over only; cameras welcome Dia de los Muertos 40th annual Celebration at El Centro de la Raza Thursday, November 1 NEW Dia de los Muertos (aka Day of the Dead) and Dia de los Inocentes (aka Day of the Innocents) happen each November 1–2. Currently played in more than 40 countries, lawn bowling started in Britain and is related to bocce (Italian) and pétanque (French). Lawn bowling is a game of skill, camaraderie and fierce competition. Simplified, the game is played in teams of two or four on level and manicured greens, called rinks. The objec- tive is to roll special weighted balls (called bowls) closer to a smaller ball (called a jack) than your opponents. An instructor will be assigned to each rink and will pro- vide equipment, teach the finer points of the game and help with scorekeeping. Players will meet at Woodland Park for a two-hour lesson. Afterward, everyone will walk a few short blocks to St. Andrews Bar and Grill for a hearty pub dinner. You'll enjoy a small house salad with your choice of one of three entrées: Robert the Bruce Burger, Sean Connery Wild Salmon Burger or Robert Burns Veggie Burger. Please have your entrée choice ready when you make your reservation. Grab a friend and test your skill at this traditional English game. 6–9 pm; $45; cancel by July 31 34 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | AUGUST 2012 Queen of Seattle Paddle-Wheeler Cruise Friday, August 10 Contact Club Programs for availability. 11 am–1 pm; $55 adults, $35 (ages 5–12), $15 (under 5) Car, Cars and More Cars: The New LeMay—America's Car Museum & Kirkland Concours d'Elegance Sunday, September 9 LeMay—America's Car Museum (ACM) celebrates our country's love affair with the automobile. Located next to the Tacoma Dome, this 165,000-square-foot four-story museum is a one-of-a-kind showcase of the best car collection in the world. It houses up to 350 cars, trucks and motorcycles from private owners, corporations and the LeMay collection, which stood at more than 3,500 vehicles, a world record, in the mid-1990s. The collection on display will cover 90 years and includes a 1906 Cadillac Model M, a 1919 Stanley Steamer, a 1926 Ford Model T and a 1983 DeLorean DMC. In addition to the museum, this visit includes the Kirkland Concours d'Elegance, adjacent to the museum on the 3.5-acre Haub Family Field. A judged, mostly exotic high-end foreign car show, the Concours d'Elegance showcases an amazing blend of classic cars, including Aston Martins, Lotuses and Jaguars. The Kirkland Concours d'Elegance is a charitable event benefitting Seattle Children's hospital and ACM. Our daytrip includes beverages and breakfast pastries at the WAC, motor coach, two-hour docent tour of the museum, admission to the Concours d'Elegance, and free time for lunch on your own in the ACM café or from a food kiosk. Extensive walking. 9:30 am–3:30 pm; $58; cancel by August 30
