If you live in Seattle, it's also quite possible that park was designed by the renowned Olmsteds, distinguished and visionary landscape architects. Volunteer, Seward, Interlaken, Green Lake and Discovery parks, along with the Washington Park Arboretum—to name only a few—help make up the Olmsteds' West Coast legacy. Think of them as West Coast cousins to Olmsted-designed Central Park. We invite you to come explore the legacy of the Olmsteds and to visit three of the more than 35 parks they designed for Seattle more than a century ago. Our tour guide will be Joan Hockaday, Olmsted champion, author of "Greenscapes, Olmsted's Pacific Northwest," and a WAC member. Between destinations, Joan will share her vast knowledge of the Olmsteds and their legacy. The tour, which begins at the WAC, includes a private motor coach and stops at Volunteer Park, the University of Washington (the site of the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition), and Seward Park. Upon return to the WAC, you'll receive an auto- graphed copy of Joan's book. This event includes an author-narrated tour, round- trip motor coach from the WAC, picnic lunch and autographed book. Box lunches include your choice of Greek salad, chicken Caesar salad, turkey and Swiss sandwich on wheat, or a veggie wrap—plus apple, bottled water, chips and cookie. 10 am–2 pm; $62; cancel by September 7 at play-by-play karaoke and announce plays from past game videos. Our panel of celeb- rity judges will include WAC President & CEO Chuck Nelson, Radovich and other local sports personalities. Sport your team's colors and get ready to rumble. Includes beer tasting and tailgate-style appetizers. No-host bar also available. 6–7:30 pm; $35; cancel by September 7; 21 and over only NEW Hot Party 6: Blow It Your Way Saturday, October 6 Our "hot parties" center around a group glassblowing class at Seattle Glassblowing Studio, where you create your own one-of- a-kind glass art. Hot refers to the state-of- the-art hot shop and 2,000 degree kilns. But we also call it hot because these popu- lar hands-on events always sell out fast. This year, participants can create any two items, such as a pumpkin and a gourd (great for seasonal décor), two beautiful ornaments (super holiday gifts), or perhaps a bowl and a vase (perfect for your living room). A professional team of glass artists will help you select colors, dip your hot glass into the crushed colored glass, fire it in the kilns, and then blow it to the perfect size and shape. After cooling a few days, your objets d'art will be available for pickup 8 | Family Safety and Preparedness Class 8 | Lawn Bowling at Woodland Park 10 | Queen of Seattle Paddle-Wheeler 11 | Seahawks vs. Titans 16 | Kids in the Kitchen 18 | Dinner at Dog Mountain Farm 30 | Seahawks vs. Raiders at the WAC. Wine and a casual dinner buffet are included and will be available throughout the evening. Reserve today before this class sells out. 6–10 pm; $185; cancel by September 21; no experience necessary NEW Haunted Pub Crawl Thursday, October 25 Encounter spirits of all sorts on this Spooked In Seattle tour through Pioneer Square, during which you'll visit a few of the city's most haunted drinking establish- ments. Ghost hunter Ross Allison leads the 90-minute walking tour through our city's oldest neighborhood, telling untold stories of its notorious past and documented sightings. This fun and educational evening begins at the historic J&M Café with a hosted happy hour drink and appetizers. It ends with another complimentary drink, this time at the world famous Merchants Café, Seattle's oldest restaurant. In between, you'll hear true tales of scandal, murder, sex and the ghosts that still walk among us. AUGUST 2012 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | 33 JOAN HOCKADAY
