We did not know a soul in Seattle. Our move was the result of Piper Jaffray and Co. transferring me to be the company's research analyst in the Northwest. Piper, a large regional brokerage firm at the time, had entered the Northwest only a year earlier via the acquisition of a local firm with offices in Seattle and Portland. I was the first employee sent out from "headquarters," so I felt a strong need to fit in with the local offices. It was a great deal financially, but an even better opportunity socially, particularly considering what the WAC has meant to me during our 38 years of membership. My membership was invaluable in helping me bond with co-workers, and I have made quite a few good friends in the basketball league, which I've played in every year since 1974. two children, and we continue to use the WAC frequently for athletics and dining. Now I have the honor of serving as your Chairman for the 2012–2013 Club year. My predecessor, Rob Fleming, worked incredibly hard during the past year, and displayed great skill and judgment in overseeing a smooth transition between our former and our new President & CEO. We're lucky to have had Rob lead us for the past 12 months, and I look forward to continuing in the path he helped set. Almost four decades after Brenda and I moved to Seattle, the fun seems like it's just getting started.
