That should have been my warning… On and off (mostly on) I continued in a period of about 10 years drinking Energy Drinks. By now I had found the Organic, 0 Sugar, Low Calorie, Energy Drinks and felt less guilty. Sometimes I would buy them by the case. What could be wrong with that? Today, I believe that some Energy Drinks are made with addictive ingredients. I would be sitting working on my computer and out of nowhere get a thought in my head and a withdrawal type of feeling for an Energy Drink. Most people do not know that some things do not work well with Energy Drinks. In the year 2020 I found out that I was Iodine deficient and started taking it. You may have realized by now that I do not things in "small scale" so instead of taking 1-2 drops per day I was taking 1 dropper per day. I have taken other supplements by "dropper" before. I made the mistake and did not consult anyone nor read the label, as a matter of fact I did not even buy it at Abby's. That is why, it is always best to talk to someone about the supplements you take and make sure you understand doses, frequency etc. After waiting for the Covid craziness to be over in December of 2020, I was to have surgery. I was still drinking Energy Drinks and taking Iodine along with other supplements. I went for my pre-op, and I remember distinctly while during the tests before my surgery and during the EKG, my heart was pounding like crazy! The nurse even said something but followed up by: "you never had surgery before it is normal to be nervous." So, I brushed it off as well. I was to have surgery two days later. I received a call from another nurse that afternoon, telling me that the anesthesiologist does not want to proceed with the surgery. She was too scared due to my heart's arrythmia, and it looked like I had Afib. But she also said that I was too young to have Afib and I have no pre-existing conditions, so the anesthesiologist wanted me to see a cardiologist and hold off on the surgery. I had no idea what Afib was. I called a close friend that is a Nurse Practitioner and also spoke with Victor at Abby's and they both said, "GET OFF THE CAFFEINE AND THE IODINE!" There is such thing as Iodine Poisoning and combine high doses with large amounts of caffeine (coffee and Energy Drinks) can be lethal. I stopped all caffeine (coffee and Energy Drinks) and the Iodine that day. I believe that, if the anesthesiologist did not put off the surgery, I could have died during it. When I went to see the cardiologist, I brought with me all the nutrition supplements I was taking at the time and told him the whole story. I will never forget, how he looked at all the supplement bottles and said: "I can't comment on that, I don't know anything about it." I later researched how much doctors study nutrition and natural supplements and was shocked about how little they learn in school! The cardiologist ran tests and sure enough I had a mild case of Afib. I again talked to a nutrition specialist at Abby's and was put on a protocol to strengthen my heart. I was also recommended the book THE SIMPLE HEART CURE by Chauncey Crandall M.D. which I read right away. I had the surgery a month later as my heart was feeling much better and with NO CAFFEINE at all for a year, the Mediterranean Diet, good supplementation, and prayer my Afib – according to the EKG - was gone. I truly believe that, if I continued, I would have damaged my heart permanently or even end up with heart failure. Today I don't drink any Energy Drinks at all. I seldom have coffee (not Starbucks their decaf has a lot of caffeine) and I feel 100% better. I am an advocate for the Mediterranean diet and also stay away from too much meat. I have a lot of energy, my days run from 4 or 5am to 9 or 10pm, I work out, I travel, and enjoy outdoor activities on regular basis; and all without caffeine or Energy Drinks. So, back to the question: Energy Drinks…. Are they good or bad for you? My reply to that question is: "you don't need them. You need your health." Talk to one of the Nutrition Specialists at Abby's and get your energy elsewhere. From Natural Supplements to Organic Foods. The Greeks may have had the saying: "Everything with measure is perfection" but the truth is, they were not the healthiest. Perfect nutrition comes from what God makes and not what man fabricates. Fruits, vegetables, oats, fish and even meat, falls under that category. However, make sure the meat is "clean" as God intended it to be – which is hard to find - and not altered by man as most meats out there are. "And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb- bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food."
