Page 22 | Abby's Magazine | www.AbbysMag.com Never before in the history of this planet have we been inundated and bombarded with so many toxins, many of which are synthetic, made by mankind! Just since the end of World War II, 1942, there have been over 85,000 synthetic toxins developed and released into our food, body care products and on mother earth. Every day we are breathing in air pollutants, ingesting toxins through our food and water, being exposed to electromagnetic pollution (EMF) and absorbing chemicals through products touching the skin. The massive amounts of toxins are overwhelming the organs of elimination, allowing the toxic levels in the body to rise. The liver responds to these threats by creating inflammation. The unresolved inflammation becomes the underlying cause of all dis-ease. The way the human and pet body deal with these toxins is either to eliminate them through one of the six organs of elimination, or if it can't be eliminated it will store it in fat. Storing toxins in fat does not make them harmless, on the contrary, they continually release toxins into the body creating chronic inflammation. The more fat on the body, the more toxins are stored. The organs of elimination are the lungs, liver, kidneys, colon, skin, and the lymphatics. Detoxification sounds complicated and unpleasant, but in fact, it is simple and effective if the systems are understood, respected for their abilities, and supported. Key Players In Detoxification Lymphatic: Vitally important for immune production and elimination of toxins, the lymph is underutilized and often ignored in western medicine. Exercise and movement are necessary, but many pets have health conditions that don't allow proper movement resulting in their lymph becoming congested and stagnant. Assisted Lymphatic Therapy (ALT) uses glass transducers that emit negative ions and inert gases to thin, decongest and move lymph to the proper drainage points in the body. Dry brushing and massage are all good to do, but none are as effective in moving lymph as ALT. Be sure the patient is well hydrated with filtered structured water before and after the therapy. Liver: Likely the most important organ of detoxification in that it does the most work, not only in preparation/neutralization/elimination of toxins, but production of critical nutrients and defense against invaders. Among its many jobs, the liver filters everything ingested, removes toxins out of the body, and produces the body's "liquid gold"— bile — which makes fats absorbable, and dumps wastes in the stool. There is a wide array of therapies to detoxify and support liver function. My favorites include: Full spectrum Infrared therapy: The pad works well for animals. For more information contact www.pascovet.com I use a botanical blend and binder that detoxifies the liver for environmental and endogenous toxins along with eliminating heavy metals, hormone metabolites, mold toxins, herbicides, pesticides, and plastic compounds through the stool. Contact www.pascovet.com for more information. Coffee enemas and ozone therapy promote the production of Glutathione, the bodies master antioxidant. These techniques combined with proper intermittent fasting are highly effective. Kidneys: Filters the blood and eliminates water soluble products/toxins in the urine. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a leading cause of death in older cats. Feeding a balanced raw diet and using structured filtered water markedly reduce risk factors. Periodic chiropractic adjustments, Assisted Lymphatic Therapy, Low Level Light Therapy along with all of the above considerations will support kidney function. Colon: Eliminates waste products/toxins through the feces. The liver/gall bladder dump many products out the body through this route of elimination. Dogs and cats (like humans) should have a bowel movement for every meal. If they eat twice a day, they should eliminate twice a day. If they are not eliminating properly, toxins will be reabsorbed in the colon. Lungs: Air pollution, both indoors and outdoors can result in serious toxicity. Breathing expels toxins and balances blood PH. In addition to breathing clean air, dry salt therapy is an effective way to clean the airways. Salt therapy acts like a toothbrush to "scrub" the airways and help remove built up debris and pathogens. Dry Salt therapy is very effective for upper respiratory conditions and lower airway disease. My practice utilizes a salt booth. The pets are inside the booth and breathing the micronized salt particles. Skin: Sweating is an effective route of elimination for people. Dogs do not sweat like people. They have apocrine glands in their armpits and genital region that secretes a thick fluid but is not designed to cool them off. Dogs have merocrine glands in the pads of their feet that act as sweat glands though they are inadequate to provide enough cooling for a dog that is hot. Dogs pant as their primary way of "sweating and cooling". As the water evaporates from the tongue and nasal passages, it helps lower the body temperature. The skin is a major route for animals to eliminate toxins. Though sweating is not a major way dogs and cats eliminate toxins, promoting a healthy diet and lifestyle along with supporting detoxification of the other organs (especially the liver and lymphatics) will result in fewer allergies and healthier skin. Salt booth therapy also benefits the skin microbiome. The Role Of Obesity In Dis-ease Obesity in companion animals is a serious health challenge that leads to an increased risk for many other disorders. The link between excess body weight and many diseases has to do with the adipose tissue (fat) actively producing hormones, such as leptin and resistin, along with cytokines which are inflammatory products that lead to cancer. The persistent, low-grade inflammation secondary to obesity is thought to play a significant role in chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis, cardiovascular and lung disease, skin disease, reproductive disorders, urinary tract problems, diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, oxidative stress (production of excess free radicals), and cancer.
