Detox is a process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids the body of toxic or unhealthy substances. When you think of the word detox the majority of you are thinking of juicing, fasting, or eliminating specific foods/drinks from your diet. Although these are great healthy habits, there is no scientific research to back up that these are the mechanisms doing the act of detoxing for your body. A big misconception in society today is that we must take something in, whether it be a supplement or a substance, in order to detox our body. Yet, what most people don't realize is that many of our body systems have their own way of eliminating toxins naturally. Innately our liver, kidneys, digestive system, skin, and lungs all eliminate toxins on a regular basis. This is a large portion of their job. Let's look more in-depth to our digestive system. The intestinal tract help expel toxins through bowel movements. This is done by having proper gut health, which occurs when we have a variety of nutrients and fibers in our diet. The nutrients in our diet help support the good gut bacteria in our digestive tract to reduce the overgrowth of harmful bacteria. Therefore, yes it does matter what foods you fuel your body with, but it's not because of the foods that you are now detoxing. Your body never takes a day off, it is always detoxing innately. In order to successfully detox, there are many pieces of the puzzle that must fall correctly into place to then accomplish the end goal. Look back at the digestive system, you must eat a well-balanced diet in order to provide good gut health, which will then reduce overgrowth of harmful bacteria, to then be able to eliminate the correct toxins through a bowel movement. What if one of the pieces of the puzzle was broken? What if you are eating a well-balanced diet, and drinking enough water, yet your bowel movements are not healthy? This is where a vertebral subluxation may come into place. A vertebral subluxation is a misalignment of the vertebrae along your spine causing there to be pressure on a spinal nerve. In simple terms, our brain is connected to every part of our body through nerves that run down our spinal cord, out through each vertebral level and to their designated organ. These nerves give the brain information about the organ, or vice versa where the brain gives the organ information. This kind of information for example can be, "hey brain, it's a digestive tract nerve speaking, there's something harmful in the stomach and I need some help to attack it." If the vertebra along the spine is out Detox with Chiropractic By Dr. Dan Durrieu and Alexandra Durrieu
