Collin Gow, C.N.C. is a certified nutritional consultant who has been working in the fields of health and nutrition for 13 years and researching for over 20 years. Collin is currently employed at Abby's Health and Nutrition consulting and educating in the Tampa Bay area. Q: I am a female in my 60s taking everything for my bones (calcium, magnesium, vitamin D3, vitamin K2, MBP, boron, silica) and doing exercise, but my dexa scan for osteoporosis is getting worse. What else can I do? A: Make sure all the water you drink is naturally alkaline spring water with a high TDS level. Take 1/8 tsp baking soda twice per day on an empty stomach. Make sure your sex hormones are at their peak and in balance (estriol, estradiol, estrone, testosterone, and progesterone). If the hormones are not at the right levels, then take DHEA in addition to BiEstro from Life-Flo, as well as genistein capsules. Estrogen is especially important for osteoblast activity and bone formation. Increase your fruit intake (potassium reduces bone resorption). Do not take PPI drugs. IGF-1 may be helpful also. Be well. Q: What's the difference between 1 a day multivitamins and 2 a day multivitamins? I have a 2 a day, but can I just take it once a day? Thanks for your advice. A: Two per day multivitamins usually have higher potencies of the minerals, but sometimes just have higher potencies of everything, because you're taking two pills instead of one. Two per day multis are also sometimes more comprehensive than one per day multis, meaning they sometimes have a wider variety of nutrients. If you have a two per day multi, it's not gonna hurt you to take one per day. But, for future reference, if you think you will only take one per day of a multi, then just buy a one per day multi. It is formulated specifically for that to ensure you're getting enough of your basics, so it's better suited to be taken that way. And, in case you are wondering if you can take a one per day multi twice a day, the answer is yes, generally speaking, but it depends on the multi. If it's a high potency one per day multi, then I wouldn't take two per day long term, but you probably could temporarily if you're sick or something. The best bet is to buy for how you think you're going to take the product: once a day or twice a day. Be well. Q: Do you know if Collagen Peptides cause high cholesterol? A: There are few studies on the subject you're inquiring about. However, I've seen one study which showed that collagen peptides derived from skate raised total cholesterol 2.8 points after 12 weeks. I saw another study that showed that fish-derived collagen peptides lowered cholesterol about 1 point after 12 weeks. So, it's possible that collagen could raise or lower cholesterol, insignificantly. Yet, usually the foods that raise cholesterol are animal foods and junk foods. Collagen comes from animals. All that being said, cholesterol per se is not the only predictor of cardiovascular events. But, the pros and cons of The Cholesterol Myth is a long subject for another day. Make sure you are taking a natural anti-inflammatory, such as an omega-3 or turmeric or garlic or some other heart healthy product, if you're worried about the collagen. Or take it sporadically. Or don't take it at all. There are other supplements which may help with healthy cholesterol levels as well. Talk to your doctor before making any changes. This is not an attempt to treat, diagnose, or prevent any disease or condition. This is not medical advice and I'm not a doctor. Q: Does Abby's have anything for stress during pregnancy? What can I take that is safe? A: Abby's carries a product called Peaceful Mama by Redd Remedies. It contains b-vitamins, casein hydrolysate, lemon balm, and ginger. It is safe for pregnant and nursing moms, as well as all moms looking for stress relief. The main supplements that one should avoid during pregnancy are very bitter herbs. Bitter herbs can stimulate contractions and cause a miscarriage. There are no bitter herbs in the Redd Remedies product and its ingredients have either traditional and historical use in infants and/or have been demonstrated to have no adverse effects to both fetal development and the health of the mother. It is also formulated by a master herbalist, who is a mom. Another way to go, to keep it simple, would be to just buy lemon balm. It is one of my personal favorite herbs and, in addition to its calming effects, it also happens to be antiviral and helpful for focus. Talk to your doctor before making any changes, but those options get my approval. • Increase Lean Muscle • Boost Performance • Speed Recovery The True Science of Protein 25% OFF Nov. 2023
