The general population is so drained and numb regarding any kind of stress in their lives. Now we automatically assume that an example of stress is getting fired from your job, or not getting to an interview on time. Yet, stress works itself in many ways, and the cool part is that our body has this system called innate intelligence that allows your body to cope with stress, so your body doesn't become overwhelmed. If your body's sympathetic nervous system is turned on, this means that your body has gone into "fight or flight" mode. A perfect example of this would be if you see a tiger and need to run away from this tiger, your body goes into sympathetic mode and a hormone called cortisol is released. Cortisol is a steroid hormone that is produced by your 2 adrenal glands, that sit on top of each kidney. When you are stressed, cortisol is released into your bloodstream in a large amount. The main functions cortisol has on the body is that it responds to stress or danger, it increases your body's metabolism of glucose, it controls your blood pressure, and it reduces inflammation. The problem can arrive when you have too much cortisol or too little cortisol then you have an issue coping with stress. So how can we solve this problem? The big idea to note is that the biggest time for producing and storing cortisol is during the night while you are sleeping. This is the time with your biggest cortisol production. This gets stored in the adrenal glands and saved for when you encounter a stressful event. Yet, the question stands on what happens if you don't get enough sleep, or you wake up during the night? This is when your cortisol levels become unbalanced and you are unable to handle stress, or your body is depleted from its cortisol storage. Let's talk about chiropractic. Now, hypothetically what if you are experiencing terrible headaches and they are keeping you from going to sleep, which then keeps you from balancing out your cortisol, therefore your body can't cope with stress. You now have a domino effect all from the primary cause being the headache you are experiencing. You find out the first bone in your spine called the atlas is out of alignment and it's putting pressure on your brainstem and pushing on your carotid artery that brings blood flow to the brain. This is where the term subluxation comes into play. A subluxation is a misalignment of a vertebrae along your spine putting pressure on a nerve. The misalignment of the atlas is producing a headache, not allowing you to sleep, increasing your cortisol levels, and not available to cope with stress. The ultimate domino effect has occurred. The power of chiropractic can allow you to clear out any subluxations in order for you to live life with zero interferences throughout your nervous system. Let's cope with stress with an interference free life, and that way we can be present and joyful with the people we love. At Family Health Chiropractic we make it our goal to make sure we are balancing out your nervous system to the best of your abilities one adjustment at a time.
