Collin Gow, C.N.C. is a certified nutritional consultant who has been working in the fields of health and nutrition for 12 years and researching for over 20 years. Collin is currently employed at Abby's Health and Nutrition consulting and educating in the Tampa Bay area. Question: Hello. I am suffering from an alcohol addiction and my health is tanking. I cannot afford treatment or doctors. Do you have anything that can help with this? Thanks! Collin: We do have a few supplements that may help. Kudzu is a plant that is well studied to reduce voluntary alcohol consumption and to reduce the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. I would recommend the Solaray Kudzu Extract; 1-2 capsules, twice a day with food. I would also recommend the Now L-Glutamine powder; 1/2 teaspoon twice per day on an empty stomach. This may help with alcohol cravings as it would provide a fuel source for the brain instead of the acetic acid in alcohol, tricking the brain and making it think that it has consumed alcohol. Glutamine is a natural amino acid. Lastly, add in Milk Thistle to aid liver health since alcohol damages the liver. There are many good options that we carry for that. Talk to your doctor before making any changes and be well. Question: I have a goiter and am worried about my thyroid. What can I take for that? I heard estrogen causes that, is that true? Collin: Iodine deficiency is by far the most common cause of goiter (swelling of the thyroid gland), not estrogen. Your doctor probably won't mention iodine to you. However, without iodine, there's generally no hope to fix a goiter, other than surgically removing your thyroid or radioactive iodine, which I of course don't recommend. Selenium or Brazil nuts and kelp or dulse or another seaweed help as well. I recommend 1000mcg iodine after breakfast, 200-400mcg selenium or 4 Brazil nuts, and 1 teaspoon of dulse per day. There are other things you can do, but that's a start. Give us a call for more info. Thanks. —Collin Question: Hello. I have b27 spondylarthritis. What can I do for that? Collin: So, I'd recommend taking a very strong antimicrobial such as Bacteril or something similar, then after that I'd recommend thunder god vine, Corydalis yanhusuo, green coffee bean, two different probiotics, fermented foods, a high fiber Mediterranean diet, a prebiotic such as Acacia, a postbiotic such as butyrate, and natural anti-inflammatories. However, probably the best thing to do would be to get a fecal transplant instead of all of this. Most of the studies I found on the subject were about how the gut is colonized by all kinds of bad bacteria, viruses, and fungi, causing B27 spondylarthritis. Another option would be to go to a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and get Modified Yanghe Decoction. These are my recommendations, however, talk to your doctor before making any changes.
