Chiropractic will give you an Easier Pregnancy and Safer Birth Dr. Dan Durrieu Family Health Chiropractic 5015 W. Waters Ave. Tampa, Fl. 33634 PH. 813-882-8181 One of the most important mes for a woman to be receiving chiroprac c care is during pregnancy. Once concep on has started, your body goes through a series of unbelievable changes. Some are very easy to catch such as a growing belly, changes in posture and the changes in gait that are common during pregnancy. What is not visible are the millions of different hormonal changes and chemical reac ons occurring both in the mother and the developing baby, all of which are controlled and coordinated through the nervous system. During pregnancy you need a nervous system that responds to changing requirements in all parts of your body, and therefore you need a healthy spine. Chiropractors have actually cared for pregnant women for many years. With the increased interest in natural birthing, and in an effort to avoid having a c-sec on, a growing number of mothers have incorporated chiroprac c into their prenatal care. The poten al for damage in pregnancy and the postpartum period to a woman's neuro- musculoskeletal structure is great. Shi s in the center of gravity forward and slightly up destabilizes the posture and forces her joints, nerves, muscles, bones and connec ve ssues to damage. Lower back pain in and of itself, is a burden to a woman's daily func on. However, the misalignment's of the spine and pelvis called subluxa on can overload the mother's nervous system, poten ally impairing any of her vital systems and organs. A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible posi on for delivery. This can affect the mother's ability to have a natural, non-invasive birth. Breech and posterior posi ons can interfere with the natural ease of labor and lead to interven ons such as c-sec ons. What about chiroprac c care and breech deliveries? Larry Webster, D.C., founder of the Interna onal Chiroprac c Pediatric Associa on (ICPA), developed a specific chiroprac c analysis and adjustment which enables chiropractors to establish balance in the pregnant woman's pelvis and reduce stress to her uterus and suppor ng ligaments. This balanced state in the pelvis has been clinically shown to allow for op mal fetal posi oning. The technique is known as the Webster Breech turning Technique. The Journal of Manipula ve and Physiological Therapeu cs reported a 82% success rate of babies turning vertex when doctors of chiroprac c used the Webster Breech turning Technique. So, the results from the study suggest it may be beneficial to perform the Webster Technique, as soon as the 8th month of pregnancy, when a woman has a breech presenta on. Currently, the ICAP recommends women receive chiroprac c care throughout pregnancy to establish pelvis balance and op mize the room a baby has for development throughout pregnancy. Op mal baby posi oning at the me of birth also eliminates the poten al for dystocia (difficult labor) and therefore, results in easier and safer deliveries for both the mother and baby. Pregnancy Exercise Tips 1.) Do not exercise for longer than 30 minutes at a me. 2.) Limit aerobic ac vity to the low-impact variety. Brisk walking, swimming, and riding a sta onary bicycle are good choice. 3.) Measure your heart rate at peak ac vity not to exceed 140 beats per minute. 4.) Avoid, a er the third month, to do exercises that require you to lie flat on your back that can reduce your heart rate, lower your blood pressure, and may reduce blood flow to baby.
