We are harvesting our first crop this year and I couldn't help but think while picking this morning… Abby would be so proud and thrilled to see this come to fruition. She understood the incredible health benefits of fresh, organic, blueberries but also the health benefits of being outdoors, working with your hands and enjoying nature. Today, our blueberries are for the use and enjoyment of our Nine years ago, when Abby and I were laying out the vision and plan for the farm, blueberries were right at the top of the list of future projects. You've no doubt read about the blueberry dream in many articles and posts about the farm. We knew then it would take a lot of time, talent, and treasure to do it well and we would need an "army" of volunteers to maintain. Last year we prepared the area, ran irrigation, ordered materials and my grandson Atlas and I drove to Winterhaven and Organic farming is not for the faint of heart. Particularly, specific crops that conventionally grown, require an inordinate amount of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Blueberries, like everything else we grow organically at our lovely farm, simply require more thought and work than food grown using conventional methods. Guess what… it's worth it!
