Collin Gow, C.N.C. is a certified nutritional consultant who has been working in the fields of health and nutrition for over 13 years and researching for over 20 years. Collin is currently employed at Abby's Health and Nutrition consulting and educating in the Tampa Bay area. Q: Does Abby's have any products that help to increase Gas6 (Growth Arrest Specific 6)? A: Gas6 is vitamin K dependent protein made by the body that plays a role in cell proliferation, hair growth, and other processes. Gas6 is inhibited by corticosterone, which reduces hair growth. Corticosterone is the rodent equivalent of cortisol. So, it stands to reason that elevated cortisol levels in humans would reduce hair growth. Of course, this makes sense, being that stress causes elevated cortisol levels and stress can cause hair loss. So, one would likely need to take adaptogenic herbs to balance cortisol to help this situation. The best adaptogens to choose in my opinion for hair loss would be Panax ginseng and Astragalus. Not only would those help to balance cortisol, but there have also been studies on those herbs showing that they have hair growth promoting properties. Also, it seems to me that taking vitamin K would be important as well. And there are many other supplements that can help with hair growth too. Thanks for the question. Q: Is CoQ10 vegan? A: CoQ10 is created by microbial fermentation of a broth that can consist of ingredients that are not always vegan. For instance, I found a study where the researchers were using glucose, beef extract, yeast extract, peptone, and some minerals for the culture medium. However, one can find CoQ10 in vegetarian capsules. And some brands do make certified vegan CoQ10, such as Source Naturals and Country Life. So, the broth used in the fermentation of those CoQ10 supplements must be vegan ingredients, I'm assuming. The Source Naturals one does say "does not contain any animal products or animal derived ingredients". Hope that helps. Q: What's the difference between 1 a day multivitamins and 2 a day multivitamins? I have a 2 a day, but can I just take it once a day? Thanks for your advice. A: Two per day multivitamins usually have higher potencies of the minerals, but sometimes just have higher potencies of everything, because you're taking two pills instead of one. Two per day multis are also sometimes more comprehensive than one per day multis, meaning they sometimes have a wider variety of nutrients. If you have a two per day multi, it's not going to hurt you to take one per day. But, for future reference, if you think you will only take one per day of a multi, then just buy a one per day multi. It is formulated specifically for that to ensure you're getting enough of your basics, so it's better suited to be taken that way. And, in case you are wondering if you can take a one per day multi twice a day, the answer is yes, generally speaking, but it depends on the multi. If it's a high potency one per day multi, then I wouldn't take two per day long term, but you probably could temporarily if you're sick or something. The best bet is to buy for how you think you're going to take the product: once a day or twice a day. Be well.
