WheelsOfGrace.com | Volume 14 Issue 6 | 5 TECH Q&A By Fix My HOG BlackSheepHDFC.org BlackSheepHDFC.org Carb or Spark? I just had the S&S super E carb on my 84 Sportster XLH 1000. I was just riding it and she was running like a dream then all of a sudden and in the worst it could happen. My bike started sputtering and died on me. Now she won't start. New plugs. Customer has this to add: Well, it seems once the bike cools down, she starts right up. My guess is she dies once she gets hot and won't start. Like it's not getting any spark to the plugs. Often, a failing coil or ignition will work fine until the unit gets hot. You need to determine if you are losing spark. Verify that the issue is not fuel related. We also suggest that you test your charging system. Custom Front Fender Mounting I bought an aftermarket front fender for my bike that wraps and hugs my 21in front wheel. I am having trouble mounting it the correct way, first time we mounted it I went over a RR track on the highway at 70 mphs and the fender sucked down on to my front tire and locked it up and caused me to wreck. If you could please help me figure out the correct way to mount it on this springer front end it would more than greatly appreciated. When you are mocking up a custom fender, it is important to secure a couple lengths of 1/2″ diameter oil hose/line to your front tire. Secure the hose across/around the tire. Then take the fender and let it rest on the wheel/oil lines. At this point you can mark the points where you will drill holes for mounting the fender securely. Determining proper tire clearance inside your fender is extremely important. As you know, an incorrect clearance can be very dangerous. Dyno Tune I have a Stage 1 and 255 cams. I paid for a dyno tune-up, which only took 30 to 45 minutes. Did I get what I paid for—$450.00? Would expect a price like that if they spent 3 or 4 hours chasing a good tune (at $100 per hour for labor, depends on the shop). If there are no parts in that price, you may have paid too much. Should ask for an explanation. Maybe you paid for something that you didn't realize. Also, you should have a printout of before & after with horsepower & torque. 500-Mile Harley Break-In Period By Dennis Santopietro Concerning the 500-mile Harley break-in period. Can this be done on a lift with the bike strapped down and in gear? Or does it need to be under load while riding? Break-in procedure for a newly assembled engine should be done on the street. Yes, the motor should be under load, under normal riding conditions. Should try to stay under 2,500 RPM and not stay at one steady RPM for an extended period of time.
