But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing will be there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy" (James 3:13-17, NKJV). This setting of scriptures deals with the dividing line between worldly wisdom and godly wisdom. Many times in life, people will come to us to share their wisdom, sometimes even saying that God has given them a word. These scriptures make it very clear the difference between man's wisdom and God's wisdom. The characteristics of worldly wisdom are self-seeking, envy, and bitterness, and they can all be summed up as selfishness. Therefore, when wisdom comes from this set of characteristics, we can be sure that it is not from God. James says that this wisdom is earthly, sensual, and demonic. This would bring about confusion. But, God's wisdom will be peaceful, pure, gentle, willing to yield, and full of mercy and good fruits. With any set of circumstances or decisions, when there is a lack of peace and mercy, it comes from self-centeredness. You can see this wisdom in our churches, business meetings, and chapters. The hallmark of God's wisdom that comes from above is that it will bring and produce peace. These guidelines show the difference between man pretending to be wise and the real wisdom of God. Our wisdom must not only be a wisdom that thinks and talks well, but it must walk well. Those who live in malice, envy, and contention are confused and bring about confusion. They do not have the peace of God; therefore, this wisdom will never bring peace. The fruit of purity, peace, gentleness, and mercy were proved to be the wisdom of God. The true mark of God's wisdom will bring life, restoration, and peace. Use these characteristics when seeking God's wisdom and you will know His wisdom. By John Ogden Sr. God's Wisdom or Man's?
