A Mother's Story Diana Villanueva Eight years ago I discovered that I was pregnant. My husband David and I already had two beautiful daughters. David was the only boy among four sisters and had lost his dad when he was only nine years old. My hope and dream was for the Villanueva legacy to continue. I wanted David to have that father/son relationship he never had with his father. As a women of faith I prayed and prayed that our child would be a boy. Whenever I would tell people I was pregnant I would tell them I was having a boy even though it had not been confirmed. People would ask me. "What if it's a girl? What are you going to do?" I would just say, "That's not going to happen. I'm having a boy." That's how strong my faith was. God was going to answer my prayer. When the day to view the ultrasound finally came, our family joined David and I to see what we were going to have.. When we saw it was boy, we began shouting and crying with excitement. God had answered our prayers! At thirty-four weeks, I was having a lot of contractions and would have to go to the hospital to make sure everything was alright. After getting shots to stop the contractions, I was sent home. On May 11th I was getting contractions every five minutes, and so it was off to the hospital again. I was there all night and saw my doctor in the morning and was cleared to go home. Nevertheless, I felt something was still wrong. I continued to have very strong contractions, but this was too soon! As the nurse was checking my vitals for the last time before being sent home I began to scream because the contractions were coming on strong! The nurse said the machine was not registering the contractions. He then began to move the band on my stomach and ran out the room. Soon he returned and told me to relax and then put an oxygen mask on me. He told me to calm down and to take deep breaths. I told them I was breathing fine and I began to panic. One of the nurses said, "You're having your baby today!" I said, "What?" Just a few minutes ago I was told that I was going home! I began to pray and ask God to take control! I began to sing, "All I need is you Lord!" as I was being rushed through the hospital. As I was getting the epidural, the nurse was hugging me and telling me everything was going to be ok. I told her, "I know God is control." When my son was born he was so tiny, just four pounds, six ounces. I remember seeing him and wondering why he was so small, but I was just happy that he was ok. Later on, I asked what had happened. One of the nurses said my nurse had noticed that the baby's heart rate was dropping quickly! As it turned out, the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck! If I had been sent home that morning our son would not have made it. Our God, my Savior rescued him! He was named, David Josaphat Villanueva (aka DJ) and he just turned seven years old! He loves God and just recently asked to be baptized! He also loves riding on the back of the Harley- Davidson with his daddy! God has given me this verse: "The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came upon me; I was overcome by trouble and sorrow. Then I called on the name of the Lord: "O Lord, save me!" The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. The Lord protects the simple hearted; when I was in great need, he saved me." (Psalm 116:3-6). b
