ALL IN | AD Today 2019 | 27 Chrissy Nardini President American Metals Supply Co., Inc. Tim Horsman President & CEO E.B. Horsman & Son ALL IN, TOGETHER continued from page 25 opinions at meetings, on surveys, votes, and other instances in which we're called to participate. In the past, we haven't necessarily attended and/ or been active participants in the Spring and Fall meetings, nor have we fully participated in responding to the surveys that are important to the standing of AD with our suppliers and ourselves as owners. We, as owners, need to do much better," he contended, "and our active participation in seeing that AD is run well is essential." Tim Horsman, President & CEO of AD member-owner E.B. Horsman & Son in Surrey, British Columbia, agreed. "AD has accomplished much by having empowered leaders acting with speed and agility and we have a long history of members that are engaged, supportive, and trusting of the AD leadership team and the decisions being made," he said. "One could even say that, in spirit, AD has been run like a member-owned business for years. Similar to our own businesses, we're at our best when we empower a culture of autonomy, mastery and purpose." MAXIMIZING MEMBER-OWNERSHIP "I think that the responsibilities were always there, but as member-owners we're now charged with attending our division's North American Meeting and participating in our Network meetings," said Hockin, who believes that networking has always been one of the most valuable benefits of AD. He also feels that owners need to support new member recruitment. "With various industry consolidation, we must all be assisting in driving a growing organization and finding the 'best of the best' to be AD members," he said. "AD will go where the members lead it, and as a member-driven organization, we have to serve on committees and various boards to provide insight and feedback on the current landscape," Hockin continued. "The AD staff is very capable of taking us to new heights, but it's our responsibility to give them direction and allow them to develop strategies and execute them." Juarez reiterated the importance of attending the Spring and Fall meetings every year as owners. "These are venues in which much can be learned and contributed," he explained. "Our suppliers assess the attendance and owner participation at these meetings to make a determination of how much value AD brings to them." As an owner, Horsman looks forward to being even more engaged in the AD experience and to encouraging progressive and thoughtful dialogue about the organization's future. "We need to share ideas openly with Bill Weisberg, the AD team, and Divisional and Corporate Boards to ensure that our voice is heard, and we also need to take part in and contribute to the productivity of Networks," Horsman said. As owners, he added, "we also need to remember that our collective success is dependent on driving as much business through AD suppliers as possible, so consider your business relationships through this lens wherever possible and convert non-AD lines where it makes strategic sense for your organization." continued on page 29 "As member-owners, we have a vested interest in ensuring that the AD enterprise stands the test of time, and this involves protecting our unique culture." – Tim Horsman, E.B. Horsman & Son
