ADA's posi on, published in the July issue of the Journal of the American Diete c Associa on, represents the Associa on's official stance on vegetarian diets: "It is the posi on of the American Diete c Associa on that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutri onally adequate and may provide health benefits in the preven on and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life- Can Help Prevent Chronic Diseases American Dietetic Association Says v e G eT Ar i An D ie T S cycle including pregnancy, lacta on, infancy, childhood and adolescence and for athletes." ADA's posi on and accompanying paper were wri en by Winston Craig, PhD, MPH, RD, professor and chair of the department of nutri on and wellness at Andrews University; and Reed Mangels, PhD, RD, nutri on advisor at the Vegetarian Resource Group, Bal more, Md. The revised posi on paper incorporates new topics and addi onal informa on on key nutrients for vegetarians, vegetarian diets in the life cycle and the use of vegetarian diets in preven on and treatment of chronic diseases. "Vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle," according to ADA's posi on. "There are many reasons for the rising interest in vegetarian diets.
