Omega-3s are essential to the development of the human brain and providing omega-3s after an injury may help provide the nutritional foundation for the brain to begin the process of healing itself. What to Do If a Sports Related Concussion Occurs 1. Remove the athlete from play. 2. Ensure that the athlete is evaluated by a health care professional experienced in concussion management. The following information can help in assessing the athlete after the injury: • Cause of the injury and force of the hit or blow to the head or body • Any loss of consciousness (passed out/knocked out) and if so, for how long • Any memory loss immediately following the injury • Any seizures following the injury • Number of previous concussions (if any) 3. Inform the athlete's parents or guardians about the possible concussion. 4. Keep the athlete out of play until a health care professional says they are symptom-free and it's okay to return to play. Repeat concussions may result in edema (brain swelling), permanent brain damage, and even death. What Else Can Be Done? There is no cure for concussion and TBI. There are no magic medicines nor will there ever be. The brain has to heal itself. All we can do is optimize the conditions to help the brain do the healing. With omega-3 fatty acids, we are providing the basic building block for the brain's healing. Omega-3s are essential to the growth of the infant brain; they can be effective in maintaining or improving mental health. Surely they must be important to help the brain heal when it is injured! If a brick wall gets damaged, wouldn't you use bricks to repair the wall? Omega-3s are the bricks of the brain. Omega-3 Protocol for Brain Injury Step 1: Begin with a high quality fish oil supplement— Not all fish oil is the same • The omega-3 fish oil product should be concentrated formulation that is molecularly distilled, pharmaceutical grade, and meets European Pharmacopeia standards. • For Capsules: Each 1,000mg soft gel capsule should contain approximately 600mg of EPA and DHA omega-3s combined. You will need approximately 180 capsules for the first two weeks. • For Liquids: 1 ½ teaspoons (7.5ml) should contain approximately 3000mg of EPA and DHA omega- 3s combined. Keep this product refrigerated after purchase. Step 2: Begin taking your omega-3 capsules as soon as possible following an injury as follows: • Week 1: Take 3g of EPA/DHA three times a day for 7 days (Breakfast- Lunch-Dinner or before work or school; after work or school; and bedtime.) • Week 2: Take 3g of EPA/DHA two times a day for 7 days. • IMPORTANT NOTE: If symptoms are improving, but not yet back to normal or where you or your healthcare provider thinks you should be, strongly consider staying on these higher doses for a longer period of time until you achieve the results you believe you and your healthcare provider believe you should achieve. Step 3: Purchase more omega-3 supplement to continue a maintenance dose that is important to maintain optimal brain health. • Take 3g of EPA/DHA two times a day for 7 days. Facts on Traumatic Brain Injury: • 1.7 million traumatic Brain Injury cases annually • 475,000 children sustain TBI each year • 447,000 sport-related concussions • 275,000 hospitalized • 124,000 people affected by long-term disabilities • 52,000 die from their injuries • Over $76 billion in annual TBI cases TBI: Traumatic Brain Injuries and Omega 3 Fatty Acids
