www.ChildrensHope.com | 17 Women incarcerated in the Jacmel prison 48 Women liberated from unlawful incarceration 11 Our Haitian staff has implemented a ministry to men and women in the prison in Jacmel. We recognize it's a big departure from our focus on the children, but it's a need in our community that we couldn't turn away from. Every Saturday, a doctor and a pastor from Children's Hope visit the prison in Jacmel. The doctor offers medical consultations and provides any necessary medication at no charge to the prisoner or their family. A pastor provides prayer, counseling, and mentorship. Pastor Nicolas has created a mentorship program for repeat offenders to help keep them out of the system. He works with them to stay out of trouble and become contributing members of their community. Once a month, Children's Hope provides food to feed the prisoners who are, quite literally, starving. A Haitian prison is not a place you want to be. The conditions are deplorable. The justice system that put you there is questionable, at best. There is no food or services provided by the prison. Sanitation is beyond what you can imagine. It is common for many men and women to die in prison as a direct result of these conditions. Liberation of Women Program There are currently 49 women in the prison. Not one of those women had seen a judge, nor had access to a lawyer, nor had they been legally convicted of a crime; they are held based on accusation alone. Often, these accusations are false. Four lawyers, including Children's Hope lawyer Nathanael, are working on these women's dossiers to get them in front of a judge to seek justice for their cases. Because of the efforts of these lawyers, 11 women have been freed so far. "My life here is very hard. Almost every day I see people dying from starvation. When I received food, it let me know that I was not forgotten. The prayer gave me strength to face another day here." ~ 36 year old man from Jacmel prison " Learn More Scan this QR code to learn more about our Prison Ministry
