WheelsOfGrace.com | Volume 15 Issue 2 | 25 gear and start to take off, it would pop into neutral. It has done this a few times now. I have not ridden the bike since I got back from that first day It happened. I have been to two Harley shops and a few other bike shops here in Tucson, and I am getting five different answers and opinions. I came across your site and thought I would ask for yours. I believe it may be the throw bearing, which also may be original as I have had the bike for nine years. I talked to the guy I got the bike from, and he said he has not changed the bearing. However, in going around your site and reading some of the posts, I am wondering if it may be the shifter pawl. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and enjoy your day. If your throw out bearing is bad, you will typically feel it when you grab your clutch lever. It will feel rough. If your shift pawl assembly spring is broken, the shift lever will not return on its own. Best way to begin diagnosing this would be to lift your rear wheel (m/c not running) and try shifting through the gears. If any of your shift linkage could be in question, disconnect it and continue trying to shift as you look/listen/feel for what may be the culprit. By Mark DiPietro Battery Question for High Compression How do I check to see if the correct AMP amount is being sent to starter. 1. How does an owner check that? 2. Does the battery of a Harley with a 1450ci engine and one with a 1650ci engine with high compression require the same crank amp battery? Harley batteries last 4 years; 5 if you're lucky. If you are testing your charging system at the battery: Test battery voltage with the bike off. This is also known as static. Then test running. When running, you should have at least 1 VDC more output. For instance, if your static voltage is 12.20 – Running (DC voltage at battery) should be, at least 13.20 with a healthy charging system. You can test triggered voltage to your starter by unplugging the trigger wire and testing voltage delivery with the start switch depressed. This reading will typically be 1 to 2 volts less than static voltage. You should always purchase the correct HD battery for your specific make and model. If an engine is built with a lot of compression, it should have electronic compression releases. If you need more specific info for your bikes electrical system, you should consider buying the electrical manual for your make and model. It covers absolutely everything. Brake Squeal 2008 Heritage Classic Softail – front brake squeal problem. After replacing a warped front rotor with a new float HD disc rotor 44358-00A and new HD disc pads the front brakes started to squeal when applying the brakes at low speed. This replacement was done over a year ago. The HD dealership said this was normal and would eventually stop. Unfortunately, even after regular serving as per your videos and HD maintenance manual the brake squeal is still there. Can you please advise what could be the cause of the brake squeal. Thank you. We recommend beveling the edges of the brake pads. Also, try lightly scuffing your brake pad surfaces with sandpaper. If this does not help with your squeal, you will need to try a new set of brake pads. Engine Light On My bike runs great but every so often the engine light goes on and I get a very strong gas smell. It also seems to run on one cylinder. After a few seconds the light goes off and everything is fine. Lately, the light will not go off and will continue to run on one cylinder and have a strong gas smell until I shut the bike down and restart it. Then its fine again. I checked for codes, but they say it's all clear except for what appears to read CaL 03 on my speedo. Have any info? Check condition of spark plugs, and spark plug wires. Check for an intake leak. If the engine light is staying on but you can't pull up any codes, you may need to have the dealership scan your m/c. Engine Skips We have a skip in the engine after warming up just at a constant speed. If you throttle up it goes away, until you get to a constant speed again. About to pull my hair out, any help please. Be sure to always use premium fuel. Start simple. Check for trouble codes. Check your spark plug condition & gap. Check your spark plug wires. You may want to perform a fuel pressure test. Harle y Will Not Shift I have a 1980 FLH that has been running great until it was parked for two weeks— when I took it out, I could hardly shift it. I actually had to force it in gear when up-shifting. Down-shifting seemed to be easier, but sometimes when I put it in first TECH Q&A By Fix My HOG
