Collin Gow, C.N.C. is a certified nutritional consultant who has been working in the fields of health and nutrition for 12 years and researching for over 20 years. Collin is currently employed at Abby's Health and Nutrition consulting and educating in the Tampa Bay area. Q: What is the best vitamin C for energy? A: Amla or Camu Camu. Q: I have high transferrin saturation but some of my other iron numbers are normal. What does that mean? A: Transferrin saturation indicates the amount of iron bound to transferrin. Transferrin is a glycoprotein that transports iron through the blood plasma. A high transferrin saturation has been linked to iron overload, but I would probably want to look at all of your numbers to see what else is going on. Serum Iron, Total Iron Binding Capacity, Hemoglobin, Serum Ferritin, Red Blood Cells, and perhaps other tests/ markers should be looked at. However, you're likely consuming too much iron in your diet, or in supplements, or you may have hemochromatosis. Alcohol makes the body store more iron, so watch your alcohol consumption. Get tested for hemochromatosis, or schedule a consultation with me for a more thorough evaluation. Be well. -Collin Q: I heard some bad things about hypromellose. It is in some supplements that Abby's sells. What do you guys think about that? Is it safe? A: Hypromellose (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose) (HPMC) is a semisynthetic, non-fermentable cellulose derivative. Cellulose is a natural fiber that occurs in the cell walls of plants. Hypromellose has a long safety record and it has achieved GRAS status (Generally Recognized As Safe) with the FDA at up to 20 grams per day in the United States. It is approved as an additive for food use in the EU as well. It is also considered safe because it is NOT absorbed by the body. Plus, some studies have actually shown that it has benefits for lowering cholesterol and postprandial insulin. Lastly, the Environmental Working Group gave hypromellose a rating of 1, when it comes to toxicity. That is the lowest rating possible, meaning the EWG considers it very safe. Hope that helps. -Collin Q: Hello. I am suffering from an alcohol addiction and my health is tanking. I cannot afford treatment or doctors. Do you have anything that can help with this? Thanks! Kudzu is a plant that is well studied to reduce voluntary alcohol consumption and to reduce the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. I would recommend the Solaray Kudzu Extract; 1-2 capsules, twice a day with food. I would also recommend the Now L-Glutamine powder; 1/2 teaspoon twice per day on an empty stomach. This may help with alcohol cravings as it would provide a fuel source for the brain instead of the acetic acid in alcohol, tricking the brain and making it think that it has consumed alcohol. Glutamine is a natural amino acid. Lastly, add in Milk Thistle to aid liver health since alcohol damages the liver. There are many good options that we carry for that. Talk to your doctor before making any changes and be well.
