Daytona Bike Week: Black Sheep Style! Ozzy (Buber) Otero My first time in Daytona as part of Black Sheep was one for the books. Not only did we have the incredible opportunity to do ministry and share the love of God with the biker community, but I also had the opportunity to meet other brothers and sisters who were part of this great ministry. I understood that I belonged to a big family that does wonderful ministry together! We laughed, we talked for hours, and we ate a lot of fish and chips! Daytona Bike Week has been called by many the "Sturgis of the South." Ok, so maybe nobody calls it that, and sure, we don't have the Black Hills, nor do we have the Needless Highway or the Crazy Horse monument, but do you know what we have? In Florida, we have amazing weather and twelve months of riding. Daytona is located on the north edge of Central Florida, which means that you are more likely to hit a black bear (or a drunk New Yorker on a Ducati) than you are to encounter an alligator. The weather is crazy sometimes. When people ask me what to pack, I tell them to bring tank tops and leather jackets. I have ridden in 76-degree weather, and I have almost died in 40 degree temperatures! (Floridians are not meant to ride in temperatures lower than 60! That's a fact, google it!) Daytona is the home of the Daytona 500! In the words of Ricky Bobby, "Shake and bake, baby!" Daytona Bike week, however, is the biggest event for this southern city. With more than 500,000 people in attendance, the town becomes the motorcycle capital of the world for a whole week! It is the first big event of the year for motorcycle-dom, and everybody who is itching to get their bikes out of hibernation will make the trip to Florida for Daytona Bike Week. It sounds like a great ministry opportunity, right? Well, we in the BSHDFC Miami chapter agree with you, so that's why we are going to be organizing Daytona Bike Week, Black Sheep style! We will have a lot of fun, but we will also do serious ministry on the streets and show up as Black Sheep in numbers, which is important for a state that just a few years ago was not allowed to fly our patch! But God is faithful, and God always has the last word! Amen? Many of us from around the South will leave from our homes on March 3rd. That day we will visit three major dealerships on our way to Daytona as we ride the most scenic of routes. The next day, we will ride to the historical and famous Saint Augustine, the oldest city in Florida! It is a beautiful city with so much to see, but the most important destination may be our ride to Adamec HD in Saint Augustine. This dealership is fantastic and is owned by Christians! From Saint Augustine, we will spend the rest of the afternoon on route to Daytona (...it's like Disney for bikers.). Anybody who is somebody in the industry will be there as a vendor. Sunday, the day of the Lord, we have a breakfast ride, and we will venture to Ocala National Forest for some Southern comfort food! After that, the First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach will be waiting for us to worship with them in a church invasion. Later during the day, we will go to the race- track and tour some vendors or maybe even test ride your new dream bike! On Monday, we will have to say, "goodbye" to a wonderfully memorable weekend, knowing that we had a great time and made our Heavenly Father proud. a What: Daytona Bike Week 2023 Black Sheep Style When: March 3-6, 2023 How: Ozzy Otero @ at bshdfc.miami@gmail.com
