Resolutions National Chaplains Tom & Dee Sanchez New year, new resolutions? It's January and the new year! Time for the annual parade of New Year's resolutions! Do you make them? Do you keep them? What's the point? For many, the new year signifies a new beginning and, therefore, the opportunity to make things better or start fresh. Do you know what the most common resolutions are? These are the top ten: • Exercise more • Lose weight • Get organized • Learn a new skill or hobby • Live life to the fullest • Save more, Spend less • Quit smoking • More time with family & friends, • Travel more, and • Read more Do these look familiar? Many of them are great ideas and things we should work on, however, many are not kept and then we feel bad about not losing the weight or sticking with our workout goals or whatever the case may be. What I hope you'll focus on this year is your relationship with Christ and how you can get closer to Him in this next year. Are you closer now than this time last year? Remember the words He spoke about our time and treasures. In Matthew 6:19-21, he says "Don't store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be." The Apostle Paul expounds on this later in his letter to the Corinthians: "For we are both God's workers. And you are God's field. You are God's building.....For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have – Jesus Christ. Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials – gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person's work has any value. If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames." (1Cor. 3:9,11-15) My prayer for you this year is that your relationship with Christ grows and that you are able to serve Him even better! As we get closer to God, we become more like Christ. As we become more like Christ, we draw others to Him. May your light shine throughout the new year as you reflect the Light of the World, and you live out Paul's words in 1 Cor 2:2. "I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." May God richly bless you in the coming year! a
