Chaplain's Corner – Hospital Visits pt2 Tom & Dee Sanchez/ Chaplain@bshdfc.org Last month we discussed the Hospital Visit, one of the basic responsibilities of a biker chaplain. We talked about the essentials of a proper visit – making sure it's ok to visit, observing signs and precautions on the patient's door, keeping the visit short, allowing the patient to direct the conversation, keeping things pleasant, listening attentively and praying with the person. We also began to describe some of what not to do! This is what I want to focus on in this article. Because of Dee's cancer journey, we've spent more time in the hospital than we ever thought we would. Some of you know that feeling. With this experience, has come the opportunity to witness good and bad hospital visits, often by well-meaning friends or family. But sometimes, we are exposed to some very bizarre situations. We compiled a few of these anecdotes from our lives and the experiences of Dee's friends who've been in similar situations. Here are a few of those comments or cringe-worthy scenarios: "At least you have the good cancer." – I didn't know there was a "good" one, especially considering chemo, radiation, immunotherapy and surgery! "But you're so young!" "OMG! You butchered your hair!" – cancer patient had cut her hair short because it had begun falling out. "You look great! Soon it will be over!" "You're lucky! You're getting a boob job for free!" – said to a woman with breast cancer. One cancer patient related how she was pestered by a stranger about her lymphedema bandages and didn't want to go through all the details so she said it was for a shark bite. "I know how you feel." – regardless of your experiences. One person related how the visitor spent the entire visit talking about their own issues and never focusing on the actual patient. ¿ (Below) Last Disciple: by Lou Steel (Photo Above) I look forward to reading Lou Steel's new book. Lou and I met years ago at Street Vibrations in Reno, Nevada. If I remember correctly, Last Disciples M/C was just beginning. I was impressed not only with Lou's story, but his passion for reaching the lost. God bless the Last Disciples as they partner with every other Christian rider, to reach people for Jesus. ~Marty Edwards/Founder BSHDFC Black Sheep HDFC December 2022 - 07
