Daytona Bike Week: Black Sheep Style! Oswaldo Otero Director of Hispanic Ministry, BSHDFC My first time in Daytona as part of Black Sheep was one for the books! Not only did we have the incredible opportunity to do ministry and share the love of God with the biker community, but more importantly, I had the opportunity to meet other brothers and sisters who were part of Black Sheep. It was there that I first understood that I belonged to a big family that happens to do ministry together. We laughed, talked for hours, and ate a lot of fish and fries. Daytona Bike week has been called by many the Sturgis of the South. (Ok, so nobody actually calls it that.) We sure don't have the black hills, nor do we have the Needles highway or Crazy Horse, but you know what we DO have? Amazing weather and twelve months of riding! Daytona is located on the north edge of Central Florida, which means that you are more likely to hit a black bear (or a drunk New Yorker on a Ducati) than you are to encounter an alligator. The weather is crazy sometimes. When people ask me what to pack, I tell them to bring tank tops and leather jackets. I have ridden in 76-degree weather, and I have almost died in 40-degree temperatures (Floridians are not meant to ride in temperatures lower than 60, that's a fact...Google it!). The town breathes and perspires gas and motor oil as Daytona hosts several motorsport events each year, including the Daytona 500. In the words of Ricky Bobby, "Shake and bake baby!" Daytona Bike week, however, is the BIG event for Daytona. With more than 500,000 people in attendance, the town becomes the motorcycle capital of the world for a whole week! It's the first big event for the motorcycle world each year, and everybody who is itching to get their bikes out of hibernation will make the trip to Florida for Daytona Bike Week. It sounds like a great ministry opportunity, right? The Miami BSHDFC chapter agrees with you, so that's why we are going to be organizing a Daytona Bike Week, Black Sheep style! We will have a lot of fun, but we will also do serious ministry and show up in numbers, which is important in a state that would not allow the Black Sheep to fly our patch not so long ago. Some of us (Lone Star, Houston, area contacts, and friends of Black Sheep, etc.) will leave from Miami for Daytona on Friday, March 3rd. That day we will visit three major dealerships on our way to Daytona as we ride the scenic route. The next day, we will ride to St. Augustine, the oldest city in Florida. It is a beautiful city with a lot to see, but most importantly, we will visit Adamec HD in Saint Augustine. This dealership is fantastic and is Christian-owned! From St. Augustine, we will spend the afternoon riding to Daytona (...it's like Disneyland for bikers!). Anybody who is somebody in the industry will be there as a vendor. Sunday, the day of the Lord, we will have a breakfast ride and we will venture to Ocala National Forest for some comfort food. After that, the First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach will be waiting for us to come and worship with them in a church invasion! Later, that day, we will ride to the race track to enjoy some more vendors and perhaps to test ride your dream bike! On Monday, we will say goodbye to a great weekend, knowing that we had a great time and made our heavenly Father proud! If you want to come to Daytona and need help organizing your stay, etc., please contact me at bshdfc.miami@gmail.com Who: Black Sheep from around the world are invited! What: Daytona Bike Week 2023 Black Sheep Style When: March 3-6 2023 Why: That we might fellowship with one another and demonstrate the love of Christ with other bikers! ¿ 06 - Black Sheep HDFC December 2022
