{BUZZ} Sommelier's Selection By Odin Bendiksen 2004 Beresan Merlot, Walla Walla, Washington Tasting notes: Dark ruby color. A nose of dark plum and blackberry with additional notes of mocha or chocolate. On the palate it is round and full of flavor. Well-balanced with medium acidity and well-integrated tannins. Medium finish. Discovery: Who could forget the ramblings of Paul Giamatti's character Miles in the movie Sideways? His love for Pinot Noir clouded his opinion of the great Merlot. This leads me to believe he had yet to taste any of Washington state's treasures. Merlots are not as bland or boring as Miles describes. I encourage you to try this rich and masculine wine. Its overall balance and interesting complexity make it quite drinkable. For the full experience, I recommend you pair it with Torchy's classic prime rib or new Double R Ranch tenderloin. —Odin Bendiksen is events chair of the WAC Wine Club. He also sits on the Wine Advisory Committee and is a Level 1 Sommelier. Fitness Advantage winners MEMBER ERIE STONE WON THE GRAND PRIZE of the recent Fitness Advantage Challenge. Erie won a free year of Fitness Advantage, valued at $720. From April 2 through May 31, members completed more than 5,000 workouts as part of the challenge. Each workout earned an entry in the drawing, with bonus entries awarded for inches and pounds lost. In addition to Erie's win, Group Fitness regular Mary Morgan won $100 in WACash in a "must be present to win" drawing. Chairman Elect Jeff Atkin drew the winners randomly during a celebratory event in the 4th Floor Coed Fitness area. Left: Chuck Nelson, Mary Morgan and Jeff Atkin. Right: Erie Stone. CALLED TO DUTY With international developments causing the recall of many members to active military duty, dues waivers were offered to men —and their families, if they were married—called to serve. HUNGER GAMES The Club served 2,180 meals for University of Washington homecoming. During the first two weeks of November, 17,000 meals were cooked and served. Both numbers set Club records. JULY | 2012 Shawn McWashington joins WSU radio WAC MEMBER SHAWN McWashington will join the radio broadcast team for Washington State University football games beginning this summer. Shawn will be in the booth with Bob Robertson and Bud Nameck. Director Bill Moos believes Shawn will help connect the broadcasts with younger fans. Bill Moos has "given me a very humbling opportunity," Shawn says. The Cougars open the 2012 season on August 30 at BYU. Shawn played wide receiver at Washington State from 1993–98.
