Sporting Life By Wayne Milner, Vice President Athletics WAC makes history with 5 national titles T Directors (NACAD) national basketball tournament from April 26–29. Thirty-one teams from 11 clubs—and two semipro women's teams—tipped off some of the best basketball action this side of March. More than 300 players competed, and the WAC won five national titles, a tournament record. he WAC had the privilege of hosting the 27th annual North American Association of Club Athletic night reception in the Crystal Ballroom. NBA legend Lenny Wilkens welcomed visitors to Seattle and encouraged everyone to enjoy themselves while participating in the tournament. Tournament play started the next morning with the first of what would be 65 games spread over three days. Along with the 8th Floor Gym, courts at Seattle University played host to the action. Michael Knight shoots in Open Division play. 20 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | JULY 2012 Teams from The Olympic Club (San Francisco), Multnomah Athletic Club (Portland, Ore.), Missouri Athletic Club (St. Louis), Milwaukee Athletic Club, Bellevue Club, New York Athletic Club, The Los Angeles Athletic Club, Spokane Club, The Fort Worth Club and Detroit Athletic Club joined the WAC in seven divisions of play. The WAC Women's team, which had come close in the past but never won a championship, faced its rival, The Olympic Club, on Saturday night in a packed WAC gym. The game came down to the wire, and spirited play from guard Lindsey Wilson and forward Enjoli Izidor lifted the WAC to a 66-63 victory. The home team received key rebounds down the stretch from Jill Bell and clutch scoring from Mikaela Cowles, Sarah McDevitt and player-coach Syesha Thomas. Krystal Robinson, Jennie Wild, Alicia Heathcote, Britney Lohman, Courtney Clapp and Jamie Van Horne all played extremely well throughout the tournament. A PLATINUM SHOWING The WAC's Platinum Division team—for players over age 60—proved no match for the competition. After breezing to the final, the team pounded Olympic 54-29 to capture the first-ever NACAD Platinum Division crown. The WAC displayed a balanced attack throughout, getting contributions from everyone: Ron Rech, Mike Slattery, Dave Carroll, Tim Nappen, Jim O'Hanlon, Ken Burton, Pat McBride, Jim Kristof and Al Hendren.
