Abby's Magazine - September/October 2015 | Page 37 Sport is rapidly growing in popularity in the U.S. One thing you can be assured of, kettlebell training is not an unproven fad. So now that you know what the kettlebell is and a bit of its history, the question remains, "Why kettlebells?" WEIGHT LOSS As we age, it becomes more difficult to stay thin. New studies show that, in part, it is because our levels of adipose tissue (brown fat) decrease and become inactive. Brown fat is derived from muscle and is loaded with mitochondria, which converts fat to energy. The good news is that exercise is beneficial in two ways: (1) exercise can convert white "bad" fat into brown fat, and (2) increase your body's activation of existing brown fat. We are learning that, just like muscles, our fat can be trained. Kettlebells are king when it comes to weight loss. Not only do they top the charts in calories burned, training with kettlebells also creates the celebrated "after burn", a higher metabolism for hours, regardless of your activity. The American Council of Exercise (ACE) found a 20 minute workout with kettlebells burned 20.2 calories per minute, which is off the charts! That is equivalent to a 6 minute mile or cross country skiing uphill at a fast pace. The best part is, the exercise was based on 30 seconds of effort and 30 seconds of rest for 20 minutes. NATURAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY People over 35, often complain that they have to work harder with less results. However, if you know how to exercise, then you can utilize the principle…"Less is more." Not only does this save time, but current research confirms that overtraining is detrimental to our health and produces inflammation. When we don't allow for recovery, the body produces inflammation as a way of bandaging the injury. Recovery isn't just about the day after, it can also be done during the workout. Using kettlebells with high intensity releases myokines, which not only liberates fat from adipose cells, but also inhibits the release of inflammatory cytokines produced by body fat. Kettlebells are a natural fit for High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). High intensity is a safe and effective solution to the hazards of overtraining. This may sound intimidating if you don't understand it. It is simply short bursts of activity (20-30 seconds), followed by rest and recovery. It's an excellent way to get a total body workout. It's so simple and fun, you will feel like you're cheating. 90-98% of people who exercise are NOT doing high intensity training. Instead, they focus on slow endurance exercises, and thus forego the many of the most profound benefits of exercise. NOTHING WILL RESHAPE THE BODY LIKE A KETTLEBELL The kettlebell is literally capable of reshaping your body. I have an athletic figure, which is a nice way of saying "no curves". When I was young, my sister would tell me I had the figure of a pencil, and she was spot on! Knowing I will never ever have that "coveted" hour glass figure, I am thankful for kettlebell training. With kettlebells, you don't have to worry about bulking up. Consistent kettlebell training will give you some unexpected curves. Ladies are notoriously weak in their upper body. With kettlebells anyone can build out and define slumping shoulders, get the tummy tuck and butt lift naturally. Your body will be its own work of art, sculpted and lean! SAVE TIME How valuable our time is! Often, time means more to us than money. The single biggest factor that keep people from exercising is lack of time. With kettlebells, less is more. No need to set up weights. The best part, however, is their efficiency. They are amazingly effective in short work-outs.
