THE DATA CENTER JOURNAL | 1 www.datacenterjournal.com FEATURE 2 PRIVACY AND NET NEUTRALITY By Jeffrey R Clark, PhD Government regulations are a touchy subject: it all comes down to whom or what the government is regulating. Try regulating guns and conservatives will howl; try regulating abortion and liberals will howl. Try regulating anything at all and anarcho-libertarians will howl. In the case of the Internet and privacy, data center operators are often caught in the middle. 8 GDPR: ONE STEP CLOSER TO DATA-DRIVEN BUSINESS By Olivier Van Hoof The digital age has forced us to reevaluate the traditional notions of data. We've created so much data so quickly that it's become extremely difficult to manage. We clearly need newer, specific safeguards that protect the rights of consumers whose data fuels the global economy. 12 MEETING GDPR COMPLIANCE WITH DCIM SOFTWARE SOLUTION By Mark Gaydos By May 25, 2018, all organizations that market goods and services to European Union residents must be in compliance with The EU's new data-protection laws, aka the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Designed to provide individuals more control over access to their personal information, the GDPR mandates organizations with an EU presence to comply with rules covering management and protection of certain consumer data they possess. These rules require organizations to obtain consent before processing data, report data breaches and safeguard data transfers across borders. 16 HOW THE GDPR AFFECTS U.S. TECH GIANTS By Greg Sparrow The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is an important topic of conversation for U.S. companies. Since its inception, the GDPR has raised a number of questions about whether businesses are prepared to comply. It was adopted on April 27, 2016, and allotted a two-year postadoption grace period for businesses to strategize and implement their own compliance. With less than two months left, it's been estimated that 61% of U.S. businesses aren't ready for the regulation and that only 67% of European-based businesses have begun moving to the implementation phase of their GDPR- compliance program.
