ASK Abby ASK Abby Abby offers Free Consultations - Please call (813) 996-6999 Monday - Friday from 10 am - Noon to make your appointment Do you have a question for Abby? Send your inquires to: AbbysHealthAndNutrition@yahoo.com I have been experiencing fatigue and a general inability to maintain my normal exercise levels for some time. I have some concern it is low ferritin levels. Is there anything you could recommend with a doctor's diagnosis of low ferritin levels? – Lee Hi Lee, Yes, we have products that will raise your ferritin levels. If you are anemic from low iron or low B12, you will feel fatigue. Fatigue also occurs with adrenal exhaustion. My 13-month old baby has been constipated for a couple of weeks, and her doctor suggested that I give her Miralax. Could you suggest an effective but natural laxative that would be safe for a baby of this age? Thanks for your help! – Julie Dear Julie, A buffered Vitamin C is a great way to relieve constipation. An age appropriate probiotic may help with gas. Hello, I was in your store, probably about a year ago, I saw some shampoo that helped with hair loss. I have had 4 babies and have some thinning either from that, or just from getting older (I am now 36). I was wondering if the shampoo is still available and what it was called? My husband would be interested as well, as he is in his early 40's and is seeing some thinning of his hair on top. Thank you for your thoughts. – Rose Hi Rose, If your hair loss is due to genetic DHT accumulation, I recommend Vive Naturals. Typically, hair loss occurs with low thyroid. Have you had your thyroid panel done recently? I have acid reflux and wanted to know if aloe vera juice would help me? I have been on antibiotics and they have aggravated my stomach issues. I have heard that aloe vera is a great thing to use. Thank you! – Maryann Hi Maryann, Yes, aloe is wonderful to drink to soothe and heal esophagitis and gastritis. Antibiotics disturb the natural protective layer of the stomache. The product, "Digestron" by Chi's Enterprise, repairs and replaces this layer. To avoid future acid reflux, do not drink any fluids with and for two hours after meals. Fluids will dilute the gastric juice and interfere with proper digestion! Do you have any information regarding the benefits or other considerations of drinking coffee and tea? – Kate Hi Kate, You can find literature on the pros and cons of drinking coffee. I am a proponent of Peter D'Adamo's blood type diet. D'Adamo does not recommend coffee for someone with O type blood (the most common) because of the acid content. However, the Life Extension brand sells a very low acid coffee rich in antioxidants. We also sell a caffeine free version if theobromines are an issue (fibrocystic breasts). Be aware that coffee as well as black tea are dehydrating and extra water consumption is required. There are dozens of herbal teas. Some such as green or white tea are rich in health promoting antioxidants. I suggest drinking teas that work with your blood type. You can pick up a free blood type list at Abby's or on our website, www. abbyshealthandnutrition.com. Aloha Abby, you are helping me with IBS & Colitis, thank you, the program is working well. Question, can I use Coconut Dream as a milk replacement? And can I use Ghee? The "Chantilly Ultra X" is delish in the coconut dream, so I hope that's ok. - Jane Hi Jane, Glad to hear the good news! Coconut Dream, if not high in sugar, should not disturb your IBS. Ghee is Ok in small amounts. Keep up the good work! I am confused by the labels on xylitol mints and gums. The label says these are sugar free. Is this correct? I'm cutting back on carbs and want to know how xylitol is ranked on the glycemic index. - Carol Dear Carol, Xylitol is a sugar alcohol. Sugar alcohols are derived from monosaccharides. You might believe it is still a sugar and should be disclosed as sugar on the label. However, the FDA decided that only sugars classified as monosaccharides and disaccharides, not their derivatives, need to be disclosed as sugar on labels. Since a sugar alcohol is neither of these, then according to food labeling laws, xylitol is considered "sugar free" by the FDA. As to the glycemic index, when compared to other sugars, xylitol's effect on blood sugar levels is extremely low. Sucrose – 68, Honey – 55, Fructose – 20, Xylitol – 8. Thank you for the interesting question. Page 8| Abby's Magazine - www.AbbysMag.com
