The costs of operating current supply chains in the US are large and some of this is avoidable. Table 1 lists some of these costs. They include environmental impacts and the cost to human health and safety. To significantly reduce these costs and prevent much of the waste, a fundamental shift from the component design process, used today, to a systems based design process is necessary. Component designers must collaborate using a common knowledge of how the three supply chain components will interact as product moves through supply chains. The systems approach commonly leads to 8 to 18% reduction of packaging spend alone. Table 1: Supply Chain Costs are Significant Total Annual US Operating Cost Total Annual Packaging and Pallet Costs Total Annual US Transportation Costs Transportation Annual Energy Costs $970 billion or 8.3% GDP $100 billion $553 billion $33.6 billion (16.0 gallons of diesel fuel for every ton of delivered product) $1.6 billion for only US beverage and food 70 million dry tons of wood fiber (the unit load is the largest non-fuel use of wood fiber) 25% of all US occupational injuries are during materials handling. 150 injures per day in WalMart stores from falling objects and 185 injuries per week in HomeDepot stores from falling objects 22.1 MMTCE of green house gas production from 34% of municipal solid waste.
