The three components of consumer and industrial product supply chains. To meet the evolving expectations of consumers for low cost, quality and defect free products, delivered quickly and on time, in the exact quantities ordered, and to a convenient location; supply chains are extended internationally, they are multimodal, and both unitized and parcel in form. Most all of these supply chains for consumer and industrial products are all or in part, unitized. The unitized portion of these supply chains consists of three interacting components; • The packaged product • The pallet • Unit load handling, storage, and shipping equipment These three components mechanically interact as product moves through the supply chain from manufacturer to customer. These interactions are in the form of vibration, shock, and compression stresses. The pallet is figuratively and literally the interface between the packaged product and the equipment used to move, store, and ship the product.
