Data Centers:
The Future of
the Industry?
By jeffrey r clark phd
Centralization of IT in fewer and fewer data centers has accelerated in recent
years with the growing popularity of the cloud. Many companies have forgone
the capital expenses of building their own facilities, opting instead for the
operational-expense model of cloud computing. Likewise, users have shifted
focus from local services (typically via desktop PCs) to remote services
delivered to their tablets, smartphones and other mobile devices.
But the growing demand for bandwidth and low latency creates problems
when service delivery relies on just a few large and likely distant data hubs.
