Abby's Magazine - July/August 2015 | Page 19 Abuses of anabolic steroid hormones disrupt the normal production of hormones in the body. There are several negative health consequences associated with anabolic steroid abuse. Some of these include infertility, hair loss, breast development in males, heart attacks, and liver tumors. Natural Steroid Hormones The natural steroid hormones are synthesized from cholesterol. There are 5 major classes of steroid hormones: progestogens, androgens, estrogens, glucocorticoids, and mineralocorticoids. These hormones are powerful signal hormones that regulate a host of functions. 1. Progesterone (a progestogen) prepares the lining of the uterus for implantation of an ovum. Progesterone is also essential for maintenance of pregnancy. 2. Androgens are required for the development of male organs and secondary sex characteristics. 3. Estrogens are required for development of female organs and secondary sex characteristics. Estrogens, alone with progesterone, also participate in the ovarian cycle. 4. Glucocorticoids (GC) are steroids that reduce inflammation throughout the body. Cortisol is a naturally occurring GC that is made by your adrenal glands, and works to regulate inflammation and other processes in your body. However, sometimes your levels of cortisol are not enough to counter sudden, chronic or severe inflammation. 5. Mineralocorticoids (most important being aldosterone) regulate the balance of water and electrolytes. The mineralocorticoids act on the kidneys.
