CAD is most commonly used for 2D designs utilizing vector graphics creating a final design with a similar appearance to manual drafting, however CAD may also be used for 3D designs providing an increased level of visual information. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an intelligent 3D model-based approach to virtual design and a more efficient construction. Over the last 3-4 years BIM has been adopted on a larger scale within the AEC industry and can provide many benefits over the traditional CAD based design of Data Centers. Some of the benefits include improved building design, performance and sustainability, potentially providing a means by which engineers can evaluate and analyze system impact to building operation and integrate with new green technologies estimating the resource demands of the facility. BIM provides a means of streamlining information and integrating workflows so that information is shareable, updateable and is not needlessly repeated, helping to minimize errors and omissions. Another benefit is accurate cost estimating allowing better decision-making and budgeting up-front through more careful analysis of systems, operational expenditures, accurate drawings, enhanced coordination and fewer change orders. As BIM continues to develop, push the boundaries of integration and incorporate new sustainable technologies the long term analysis, design, construction and facilities management potential becomes ever more viable and invaluable. CONCLUSIONS CFD modeling is an extremely powerful tool in optimizing the data hall environment. However, it should not replace common-sense best practices - as a matter of fact, all best practice techniques should be implemented and assumed in a design before CFD modeling is attempted.
