I told you so!" Scandalous behavior is not limited to any one church or Christian group. One day I got a call from a pastor in Northern California who had only recently become a member of Black Sheep. He called to say that he had made a mistake and that he was far too busy to be involved with a motorcycle ministry. I told him that I understood (even though I did not fully understand for he has just finished mentorship a few weeks before) and to just send his front and back patches to the office. He refused! He said that he had "bought and paid for them and that they were his." I reminded him of his mentorship and the promises that he had made i.e. that the patches NEVER belong to a member but to the ministry, only to be kept in cases of retirement or death. Still he refused. He was above the rules and he was keeping the patches. I thought about it for a minute and then asked the pastor if he could wait for just a minute. I then googled his church and looked up the address and service times. When I returned, I asked, "Aren't you the pastor of.... and aren't your services at such and such a time?" He slowly and carefully responded, "yes...." I calmly and respectfully replied, "Pastor I will be at your church next Sunday at the beginning of the second service to retrieve your patches." He asked, "You would do that?" I said, "Yes sir, I would." He concluded with, "I'll have the patches in the mail to you today." To which I replied, "Thank-you pastor. Have a nice day." The patches came in the mail three days later. A person with good character does the right thing because they believe it is the right thing to do. • Character causes us to speak the truth. • Character causes us to be truthful but kind. • Character does the right thing no matter what. • Character doesn't defend one's faults, sins or mistakes. • Character often requires a great deal of courage. The lack of character destroys business relationships, church relationships, life-long friendships and marriages. The lack of character destroys the faith and trust of a child. The lack of character can cost you your job.
