Stories From The Road Authors Unknown When riding the highway, I usually enjoy passing kids in the back seat of cars and watching them as I ease past them on my bike . Typically, I give them a little wave and enjoy the big smile that follows. T his one time, however, I guess I wasn't in the best of moods when I noticed this boy of six or eight staring at me through the window of his mom's SUV . When he stuck his tongue out at me I reached up into the air and grabbed an imaginary bug and popped it into my mouth. I chewed the critter with great enthusiasm as I watched the nauseated kid try to explain to his mother behind the wheel what he had just seen. I was in a much better mood after that! A couple of years ago I was riding home from Wisconsin, when I got caught in rain with no rain gear. With l eather jacket and chaps soaked, I was cold and had a good four hours still to go . That's when I spotted a McDonald's and thought it would be a good time for cup of coffee and a bite to eat. So here I am , soaked from head to foot, boots squishing with every step, heading for the cute teenager behind the counter . I p laced my order, and she asks, " W ill this be for here or to go?" I just looked at her and said , "really?" She g ot big laugh out of it as did a dozen other customers ! Motorcycle Quotes "Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass: it's about learning how to ride in the rain!" ( Anonymous ) "You are on your own. You are not protected by two tons of steel, rubber, foam padding and safety glass. Neither are you steering two tons of guided missile toward other cars, people and property. If you are prepared to accept the responsibility of your own actions, then motorcycling can be both safe and thrilling. Ridin g is an art as well as a craft and no amount of explanation can take the place of experience. ( Theresa Wallach, Easy Motorcycle Riding ) "You do not need a therapist if you own a motorcycle, any kind of motorcycle!" ( Dan Aykroyd ) "Animals travel on all fo urs. Mankind on two. Motorcycling is not a means of transport but an ideology, a nomadic way of life." (Amit Reddy) "Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle." (Anonymous) What 's a Hooventoos? Within the membership of Black Sheep there is a younger group of riders we have come to know as "Juventus" – the Latin word for "youth." In the Bible, 1Timothy 4:12 reads, "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." THIS is the spirit of our younger members! With the aging demographics of motorcycle riders, the Harley - Davidson Corporation has begun to recognize, advertise and market to a new generation of riders. Harley - Davidson has created and re - created a new line of more affordable motorcycles and a contemporary line of motor clothes to reach the new enthusiasts. If Harley - Davidson can recognize the need for change and adaptation, so can we. This ministry will not devolve into a handful of white haired men sitting in a donut shop on Saturday mornings, drinking coffee and reminiscing the good ol'days. Our message is t imeless but our methods evolve! If you are between the ages of 18 and 35, Juventus is looking for you. Still fanatical about motorcycles and cruising, these younger sheep ride a little different, look a little different, listen to a different kind of musi c and sometimes want a different destination, but they remain 100% wool i.e. pure Black Sheep. They are not breaking away from our 18 year old ministry, they are pioneering a new era on our behalf. They are our present and our future! "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Born to be Wild" will forever be ringing in the ears of older bikers. Old School pans, shovels and E vos, heavy leather coats and "beanie" helmets will live on among the veterans – but the future of Black Sheep belongs to the young . PAGE 10 / www.BlackSheepHDFC.org
