Page 8 | www.BlackSheepHDFC.org by Marty Edwards Albert Einstein once said, "If you want a happy life, e it to a GOAL, not to people or things." The American biker is, by defini on, a "free spirit." Slogans such as "Shut up and ride!" and "Does Not Play Well With Others!" and "It's not the des na on, it's the ride!" paint a clear picture of someone who would rather do their own thing than be encumbered by stuff like rules, deadlines and goals. Chris an motorcycle riders don't fall far from the proverbial tree! Motorcycles are for "riding free and feeling the wind in your face." Rules and schedules are op onal at best. How then, are we, as a motorcycle ministry, going to grow when absolutely EVERYONE in the professional world, including business, military, religion, health and fitness, and personal growth insist there must be set goals and objec ves if we want to see success? I'll tell you this, Harley-Davidson has goals! And you can bet your bo om dollar that the new Indian Motorcycle Company (in a fight for their life with Harley-Davidson) has established strict goals and objec ves, complete with high expecta ons for performance followed by rewards and consequences. That's how things get done. If motorcycle companies and physical fitness gurus are asking for goals and objec ves, shouldn't we? The Great Commission, given to us by Jesus Christ himself, seems to clearly imply some sense of importance and urgency that would require careful planning, which then dictates goals and objec ves. (Gospel of Ma hew 28:16-20) Most of us would agree that throwing 100,000 Bible tracts out of an airplane over Sturgis is not likely the best way of going about the business of keeping the Great Commission. Here's a be er idea… DEFINITIONS: Objec ves are BROAD, GENERAL ideas of what we want to accomplish. Goals, on the other hand, are SPECIFIC and ATTAINABLE. Greyson Adams (I.E. Regional Director, BSHDFC) uses S.M.A.R.T. as an acros c for se ng goals in business and in our Black Sheep chapters. Goals need to be… Setting goalS For SeriouS MiniStry • SPECIFIC • MEASURABLE • ATTAINABLE • RELEVANT and • TIMELY While an objec ve says, "We want to grow!" or "We want to tell people about Jesus" – goals must be SMART, and may take more me, more thinking and more planning, but isn't the Great Commission worth it? EXAMPLES: If my objec ve is to LOSE WEIGHT, that's a great idea, but un l you get SMART, losing weight is just an idea with good inten ons. (Failed businesses and ministries are paved with good inten ons!) SMART goals say: (1) "I want to lose weight!" That's SPECIFIC. (2) Then, "I want to lose 20lbs in 120 days." That's MEASURABLE. (3) Then I have to ask myself, "Is that ATTAINABLE? Yes, I think I can do that." (4) "Is my goal RELEVANT? Yes, because I want to be healthy!" (5) "Is it TIMELY? Yes, because I am feeling red and run down."
