Historically, there was no such "great divide" between the doctor and den st. At Harvard in 1867 the medical and dental students were in the same classes, both interested in the biological nature of oral medicine. As separate educa on paths became the norm any reason for collabora on faded but the inescapable fact is, we are trea ng the same body. By my observa on, the doctor-den st rela onship is cri cal for two reasons. 1) The focal infec on idea is that an area of localized infec on can spread to other parts of the body through lymph or blood flow. We observe in Natural Den stry that many systemic diseases begin with poor condi ons in the mouth, an environment that enables the growth of anaerobic bacteria that export toxins and overwhelm the body defenses. Oral focal infec ons are o en the result of past procedures such as root canals, extrac ons and the placing of metals in the mouth such as mercury in fillings and tanium implants. This observa on is important for any pa ent seeking medical treatment and for any doctor providing care. Without giving the immune system a helping hand by elimina ng sources and loca ons of infec on, it is difficult for other prac oner remedies to work. Pa ents enter the healing professions at many points and anything we can do to break down the exis ng silo approach to treatment is a step in the right direc on. 2) Elimina ng the exis ng environments where anaerobic microorganisms flourish and removing the metal toxins from the oral cavity o en involves surgery. This includes extrac ng infected root canals, removing tanium implants and mercury fillings, and performing cavita on surgery, cleaning out a site of unhealed bone infec on. Surgery is trauma to the body and an inflamma on response trigger for sure. The release of stored toxins, even with the extensive precau ons we take, is possible. We find it necessary and important to work with other health professionals to ensure the pa ent under care is healthy enough to accept that much "help." This usually involves increasing circula on, o en by hand manipula on and elimina ng heavy metal toxins from other sources. Suppor ng the body's own system of healing is what preserves life itself. I wonder if it could be my teeth? Increasing communica on between doctors and den sts is the necessary goal. As a pa ent, you can ini ate the conversa on too! The key ques on to ask your doctor is, 'I wonder if it could be my teeth?' Den sts and doctors need to be coordinated on these points in observing the oral cavity: • Good Oral Structure • The Handling of Autoimmune Condi ons • Inflamma on and Systemic Disease, and • Toxicity in the Mouth With doctors including dental health informa on on their intake forms and performing simple oral exam- ina ons, both doctor and den st will then have something to talk about! With both observing the same things and with an understanding of the processes at work, the dots will begin to connect and you, the pa ent, will have gained results where none were forthcoming in the past.
