A STAGE OF THEIR OWN
On the playground of comedy,
Kathy Griffin says let's hear it for the girls
"Haven't you done it all?" is Kathy
Griffin's least favorite question.
She may be only five-foot-three,
but you can guarantee that Kathy
has the largest personality in the
room wherever she may be. is
self-proclaimed D-lister has made
it big off of self-deprecation and
telling secrets. But to be a successful
woman on the comedy circuit, you
have to be louder than everyone
else, and Kathy's made a career out
of doing just that.
Only three women have won the
Grammy Award® for Best Comedy
Album since its creation—first
Lily Tomlin in 1972, followed by
Whoopi Goldberg in 1986. After
six consecutive nominations, Kathy
finally earned one herself in 2014
for Calm Down Gurrl. A triumph,
definitely, but Kathy's always
known she'd have to compete with
the boys. And with the reigning
record of most stand-up comedy
specials of any comedian—male or
female, alive or dead—the fact that
she's still only one of five female
comedians ever to play Carnegie
Hall by herself is a little absurd.
Are one Grammy® and two Emmys®
enough for her? Absolutely not,
because Kathy won't stop sharing
anecdotes of her 93-year-old
mother or her incendiary exposure
of the celebrity world until she feels
women have an equal place at the
comedy table, no matter how many
buttons she has to push to get there.
So to answer your question, of
course Kathy hasn't done it all. She's
just getting started.
