It's a pipe dream for many, but
talented individuals from obscure
places still make it onto that
Broadway stage time after time. Why
not some high school student from
Austin, Texas?
It's mid-spring, which means the
Greater Austin High School Musical
eatre Awards (GAHSMTA)—a
mouthful for all but a springboard
for some—is just around the corner.
Anticipation is mounting as local
high school theatre departments are
rehearsing, building, choreographing
and staging their productions. Some
are already celebrating the exhaustion
of a successful run. Others are
experiencing the adrenaline of the
11th hour—an extra lighting cue,
one last alteration, ready for the final
bows.
But nothing can compare to the
unique combination of exultation
and triumph that comes with those
first steps onto the Dell Hall stage as
the curtain rises, the orchestra swells
and all the lights swing into place.
Add to that the roaring, thundering
applause of 2500 fans and it truly is a
night to remember.
After an extensive judging process,
31 area high schools will join
together to mount the GAHSMTAs,
a professional-level awards show—in
their eyes second only to the Tonys®.
Students, teachers, family, friends,
classmates, industry role models
and local leaders in the Austin arts
community will crowd into the Long
Center decked out in their red-carpet
best. is is their moment to shine—
an important reminder that the
arts are valuable and an individual's
artistic talent is something to be
celebrated.
is is the beginning of a career they
never thought possible. And then just
like that—the curtain opens, nerves
disappear and realization dawns—
I'm in a show!
