Hardly a quarter goes by in which no major data center operator announces some new
investment in solar, wind or another alternative energy source to power its facilities.
Among the biggest investors in this area are Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google.
Although these companies garner headlines and, occasionally, grudging kudos from
environmental groups such as Greenpeace, smaller organizations lack the wherewithal
to emulate their efforts. But smaller data center operators can still take steps to be more
sustainable (both environmentally and fiscally) without jumping into the utility sector.
