1. Eat raw, fresh organic produce, free-range chicken, hormone-free meats to reduce exposure to added hormones, pesticides and fertilizers. 2. Eliminate non-organic dairy products that contain bovine growth hormone (given to cows to increase milk output). 3. Follow a diet that minimizes excess estrogen. Breast tissue is sensitive to high-fat, high-refined carbohydrate diets, which raise estrogen levels. Excessive estrogen production stimulates breast tissue, resulting in breast pain and cyst formation in many women. 4. Avoid eating too many carbs. The higher your body fat, dietary fat (especially saturated and trans-fat) and insulin levels from eating too many refined carbohydrates, the higher the estrogen levels and the greater the risk for breast and other gynecological cancer. 5. Eat your fiber. Plenty of soluble fiber from vegetables increases excretions of excess estrogen. The cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, kale, brussel sprouts, and turnips) all contain indole-3-carbinol which assists the liver in removal of excess estrogens. 6. Avoid processed, packaged foods, a major source of soy, and chemicals such as BPA and phthalates. 7. Store your food and beverages in glass rather than plastic, and avoid using plastic wrap and canned foods (often lined with BPA-containing liners). 8. Use glass baby bottles and BPA-free sippy cups for your babies and make sure your baby's toys are BPA-free (pacifiers, teething rings, etc.). 9. Use only natural cleaning products in your home to avoid phthalates. 10. Switch to natural brands of toiletries such as shampoo, toothpaste, antiperspirants and cosmetics. Use personal care products that are free of phthalates, parabens and other potentially dangerous chemicals. 11. Avoid using artificial air fresheners, dryer sheets, fabric softeners or other synthetic fragrances. 12. Replace your non-stick pots and pans with ceramic or glass cookware. 13. When redoing your home, look for "green" toxin- free alternatives in lieu of regular paint and vinyl floor coverings. 14. Replace your vinyl shower curtain with one made of fabric. 15. Avoid soy, especially if pregnant and never use soy- based infant formula. How to Avoid Xenoestrogens Abby's Magazine - July/August 2015 | Page 23
