Abby's Magazine - March/April 2015 | Page 5 ASK Abby ASK Abby Abby offers Free Consultations - Please call (813) 996-6999 Monday - Friday from 10 am - Noon to make your appointment Do you have a question for Abby? Send your inquires to: AbbysHealthAndNutrition@yahoo.com I would like to find out what is most effective for allergies? Blake Dear Blake, Moducare, Quercetin, and Probiotics taken along with buffered Vitamin C have reduced or even eliminated allergies in many of my clients. Also, eating according to your blood type improves immune response. Sincerely, Abby My husband is 45 and has a persistent cough just in the morning upon arising from bed. It is continuous for an hour or so. He has had x-rays done on his lungs and they came out clear with no infection. Cough medications do not help. Doctors don't know what is wrong. Your help is appreciated. Arlene Dear Arlene, Your husband may have a postnasal drip resulting in mucus formation during the night. The most common culprits are gluten and dairy in the diet. Your husband could eliminate all gluten and dairy to see if the coughing reduces or stops completely. This has been a successful action in some of my clients. Sincerely, Abby I have a 10-year-old son who exhibits mood swings and is easily angered and frustrated. At school, the teacher complains about him fidgeting and not listening when asked to do something. He is impulsive at times and gives up easily. I took him to a neurologist, but he is not yet diagnosed with ADHD.I think it might be emotional/behavioral. What do you recommend I give him or how can I help him? He also suffers from asthma and allergies. Susan Dear Susan, My first choice in supplements is DHA, which helps with mood and attentiveness (500- 1000 mg per day with food). Also, you may help him by making sure each of his meals is well-balanced using protein, good fat, and fiber to keep blood sugar levels stable. My blood pressure tends to be on the low side. Is there anything you can recommend to give it a little boost? Betty Dear Betty, Ruling out any medications that are lowering your blood pressure, dehydration, or low blood levels of sodium or potassium, I would target the adrenal glands. Low adrenal function may be the cause. Take an adrenal support supplement and make sure your blood level of Vitamin D3 is excellent! Sincerely, Abby Is there anything you can recommend for healthy lungs or to help someone who has smoked for a long time? Bill Dear Bill, To support healthy lung function, it is essential that you stay hydrated, get regular exercise, and minimize exposure to indoor and outdoor pollutants. My clients incorporate N-Acetyl Cysteine MSM, Oxypower, and Lung Care or Lung Assist to improve lung function. Sincerely, Abby My mother (89) has atrophying of the brain, moderate to severe. Is there anything you can recommend that will slow or stop this process? Doris Dear Doris, I suggest your mother stay hydrated and take Ginkgo (if she's not on blood thinners), Huperzin A, and Vinpocetine to improve blood flow to the brain. Also, have her take large doses of DHA, 2000-3000 mg per day with food. It is important to have her C-Reactive Protein (ideal level less than 1) and homocysteine (6 or less) levels checked. A cognitive enhancing formula is helpful to improve memory. Make sure her blood level of Vitamin D3 is above 55 and B12 is in the high range. Rule out sleep apnea. Sincerely, Abby "Natural Calm" is a flavored magnesium drink, which may help to relax his nerves and muscles. For asthma and allergies, I suggest Moducare (1 on an empty stomach in the morning and 1 at bedtime even if he is on medication). Hope these suggestions help. Sincerely, Abby I want to take DMAE for age spots. Will it interfere with Diovan for blood pressure? Tilly Dear Tilly, DMAE should be fine with Diovan. In addition, I suggest you take Ubiquinol to support Diovan's effects and protect the heart. Also, Ubiquinol is a potent antioxidant that will work synergistically with DMAE for the age spots. Sincerely, Abby Please could you briefly explain why simple sugars or junk food, such as cookies and chips, make me hungrier? When I eat these items, I eat more and never feel satisfied or full. Tony Dear Tony, Empty carbs sabotage your dietary control in the following ways: 1. They cause a short-term surge in blood sugar that increases insulin, which causes the calories to store quickly, leaving you equally or even more hungry. 2. Carbs lead to reactive hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and also deplete chromium. The lower your chromium levels, the greater your cravings. 3. Commercially available carbs have flavor enhancers that trick the taste buds and, without sufficient protein, blood sugar and nutrient states are not sustained. So the body continues its quest to be properly nourished. A food derived multi-vitamin and balancing all meals and snacks with protein, healthy fats, and fiber will satisfy your hunger cravings. Sincerely, Abby
